Default Recording - my Border Collie Dorje singing with me on my mandolin

I have a Border Collie in my home at Mansfield who sings along with me whenever I play music on my mandolin. Here is a sample.

While I appreciate his singing efforts, I usually have to practice or play on my own whenever I can.

Our Aussie, Indy, also likes to "talk," "sing" or however you want to call it. Which is why I don't bring her to my jam.

I used to bring our other dog, Toby (part Border Collie), but now that he has gotten older he sometimes pees where he shouldn't. So he is now canis non grata as well.

    Nick,

You need to listen to Jimmy Martin's 'Ole Pete'

Needless to say (being one of of those vegetarians) I may not share all of sentiments expressed therein, but I do like the song. And I named my very first rescued hound after Jimmy's dog... Pete...

Could be time to record the Irish Rover.... "and the poor old dog was drowned..."

In fact at a local music night, one dog that had been silent all night let out an almighty yell right after that line... perfect timing... the band (not to mention the audience!) corpsed so bad they never did get to the last line of the song!

    That was awesome.

My little dog will howl at fire trucks, but is content just listening to the mandolin.

Mine leave the room when I start on the mandolin. They don't seem to mind guitar, so perhaps I just need more practice...

Thanks for sharing. Nothing like a great mandolin tune and a pooch sing-a-long. Do you have a picture of Dorje?

Very cool. Me and my Sheltie, "Sally Goodin" are jealous. Sally likes to sit and listen, but I can't get her to sing.

Hi Nick - Border Collies are one of my very favourite breeds of dog, they're as intelligent as it gets - totally terrific companions. Maybe you should work up a version of ''The Wolves (collies) a Howlin' '' https://youtu.be/tm_T4s-RxvU 'specially as you've now got a great mandolin to play it on,

You probably noticed that he gets more wound up over Turkey in the Straw than Red Haired Boy. It could be the key (mode!) the latter is in (G). I will post a picture of Dorje tomorrow.

Thanks for all the recording suggestions. He is the first Border Collie I have had that sings when I play music. Maybe because I play old-time and Bluegrass tunes, they bring out his lonesome high hollering.

SincereCorgi, I really enjoyed your introductions. LOL.

One of my dogs used to howl and bay when I played fiddle. It was fun, but in my case I wonder if it was a pain response.

Not a bad idea! Get yourself a sampler Nick and Sample the Dog (Not mandolin related) then play the dog sounds on the keyboard as both the melody or rhythm, whatever you see fit. With the dog mania that envelops America you'll be a mega-sensation!

My former Dachsie didn't appreciate my mandolin playing and would jump up on my leg (requesting I stop) until I would either stop or let her out. The present Dachsie will come and sit to listen for as long as I can play, so either I've gotten better over time or this dog is partially deaf. Great thread which made me happier this morning as I love mandolin and dogs but together you just have to know the world is turning in the right direction.

That was really great. Nice phrasing, Dorje!

Reminds me of our Polish Chicken, Cher. When I play "Crested Hens", she stops, poses, and stares at me … waiting for her Oscar.

You can see why we named her Cher. She likes to come into my daughter's home hair salon and sit on the chair and lay eggs in the linen closet, sigh.

My dog sleeps thru it all, usually atop my foot. My cat, well, she runs around and jumps on things and yells and acts like she has never heard such a thing. I practice every day. Sometimes she really tires herself out.
