Default Pegasus A Style Mandolin Cases

I am currently using a Pegasus F style case for my A style mandolin. It works fine, but I have been thinking about buying an A style Pegasus case for it. The Pegasus website says " it is the smallest hardshell mandolin case in any category" Does anyone here own both, or have compared them? Are they much smaller and/or lighter than the F case? Enough to be worth switching? I really like the pictures that I have seen of them. I would appreciate any information or opinions. I have been looking to buy a used one with no luck, so I am thinking that I might order a new one.

No, dont own both .. But what he says may be true

I Got an A5 Fiberglass Eastman , they are no longer made , at all,
so abandoned the contest category, it is using single layer of cloth in the layup and Is,
    as a result, Lighter.

Sam uses several layers of FG cloth and is a Lot more rugged
for your International Air travel and the grueling touring schedule,
where the roadies & baggage handlers,
may be less than careful in handling your Band's Gear .

I have a 2nd hand Peg F, its overkill for my local playing with my Nice Czech Lebeda
but I do Like the shoulder strap options for a hauling the Mandolin around
and being able to carry stuff in my hands at the same time..

    Mandroid,
Thanks for your reply. I really like my Pegasus F5 case. It is "overkill", but that's what I want. I'm sticking with it until I can get an A style Pegasus, or someone here tells me that the difference between the two isn't enough to justify making the switch.

Does the A fit in the F case you have, Now?

Perhaps its time to converse with Sam who makes them, in Scotland,
and perhaps will answer the weight difference questions..

and perhaps offer a Lighter lay up option to reduce the weight a Bit ..

I have had a Pegasus A style case for 10 or more years, and like it a lot. I also have an Eastman, which is smaller and lighter, but has the disadvantages of being less sturdy and having virtually no interior storage space. The Pegasus has two nice storage space and is very strong.

I have never done a one on one comparison with the Pegasus F and A style cases, but from what I can see, they are pretty much the same size as the F, They might be a little wider to accommodate the points, and there could be a little more headstock room, plus the scroll area, but I don't think these are major. Check with Sam, he can tell you for sure. So if your mandolin fits well and is supported properly, there is obviously no pressing need to change to the A style case. You might find somebody who wants to sell or swap, but I for sure am keeping mine. You could get a new one for esthetic reasons, and probably wouldn't have much trouble selling your old one.

    Spencer,
Thank you for your reply, that is exactly the information that I was looking for. I have been looking for a used one. I am going to place an order for a new one if I don't find one soon.

Looking at the Pegasus site Sam describes his A case as built around a Gibson A Junior body and a Red Diamond neck and headstock. My 13 A4 measures approximately 10 3/16" in width and 13" across the original case. Looking at the photos in his gallery the interior padding is thinner around the rib area than on the F case( no points to deal with). My F Pegasus measures about 14 1/2" and looking at the two yellow cases together we could probably be pretty close at an inch or more difference. He also suggested using his F case on larger bodied A models.

the F style Peg. case can be ordered such that also fit an A model snakehead...
The Foam insert is a little wider and a perhaps a little deeper than for the standard F...
One nice unexpected benefit is that a Loar style F model will fit in there very nicely with a tone guard attached...
    For those who like F's + A's + Tone guards....its worth considering.

Thomas my 06 Goldrush fits with tone guard in my case. I bought used so I have no Idea which insert it has. Interestingly when I Googled Pegasus to find SAMs web site my maroon with Green interior case came up still floating around from when it was advertised years ago at Mandolin World Headquarters. Another dead hamster with it's wheel still turning.

Late to the party here- I had a Pegasus A case on my old snakehead A4. Great fit, great protection, plenty of room for toys in the case, and balanced to strength rather than lightness.
