Thread: The Traveling Pick Sampler - Anyone Interested?

  1. #951

Default Re: The Traveling Pick Sampler - Anyone Interested?

Sampler #2 ready to move on.

I have a mandolin student coming tomorrow, and plan to have her check it out, so will plan to mail out to milli857 on Thursday. The 2 BC picks arrived a couple days ago, thanks Mark! I’ve gone through the sampler a couple times, and had some friends over to try out the picks - what a great resource we’ve all co-created! I’m adding a Taterbug Special (Mike Compton), a primetone .88, a clayton shark 1.26, and a Clayton black raven .73.

My favorites in this bunch are, in no particular order: Jim Dunlop 207 small triangle, D’Andrea Plec triangle 1.5, BC CT 55. Honorable mention to Zemaitis triangle.

The BC picks were sent out a little over a week ago, and as Stopstop and snakehead_a2z have indicated they arrived safely.

    Sampler #1 now includes a CT55, TP48 and TD40

Also donated was another CT55. The question is what to do with this pick?

My intention is this: I will order a CT55 from BlueChip (since the one sent has been opened and tried by me) and place an ad in the Classifieds to sell it at a small discount, so that the proceeds may be donated to a worthy cause, my thoughts are to donate the proceeds to the cafe site. I have been a donor to this site myself over the years, but it's been awhile, and since the pick was donated to the cafe sampler by BlueChip to benefit cafe members, I think it is fitting that the extra be used to benefit the cafe site. Other ideas are welcome, but I prefer not to spend too much energy on the disposition of this extra pick. By purchasing a new one with my own funds, I get to keep this pick and benefit the cafe as a whole with the new one I receive.

An announcement will be placed here when the ad is up ... unless there are other suggestions to consider. Suggestions are welcome, but please keep it simple.

Just a couple other announcements I failed to mention:

I did hear from Southern Man, who had volunteered in the past to organize the sampler program. He stated that he preferred not to take it on at this time, but stands ready to help if need be.

Also, there have been some suggestions sent to me about contacting a couple of other pick suppliers just to see if they may be willing to donate a few picks to the cause. I think it’s a good idea, and will be following up on those suggestions when time allows.

An update - I came down with COVID and will ship out Sampler #2 next week, after the 10 day quarantine period is over.

I tried lots of picks and ended up coming to the conclusion that, of the picks included, I liked the Blue Chip CT55 the best. However, when I tested it against my Wegen TF140 that I use for guitar, that there was only a small difference in tone (the BC was very slightly smoother) and the Wegen had better grip. I guess I'm sticking with Wegen for all my picks!
I guess I'll just stay right here, pick and sing a while...

I now have #2, and so far for my guitars I like the Wegen white and the JT picks (both the white and the blue) rounded edges. I am going to start evaluating them all on my mandolin (Collings MT2) strung with EFT74s. I'll report the results for the mandolin.

Thanks so much Mandolin Cafe for doing this again! I have been exposed to picks I never would have gotten to try.

I’m happy that one of our members chose to support the cafe while obtaining their own Blue Chip pick. I’ll take this opportunity to encourage others to donate to this website. It’s not mentioned often enough. You’ll find links in the header of the site that make it easy to donate to the cafe.

I'm looking forward to investigating them over the next couple weeks.

I just want to send a big Thank You out to Mark Gunter and the Cafe in general for the opportunity to try out a pick sampler. I just had #2 and found it invaluable in deciding what pick works best for me. I could have spent hundreds and years doing it on my own. Turns out I only really liked two different makes of picks and in 3 different thicknesses. I guess I'm pretty picky (no pun intended) about what I like!

Please add me to the list for either / both packs. I currently play with a Blue Chip CT55, and imagine I can narrow the favorites quickly and get it back on the road; but I’ll admit I haven’t played a lot of picks. I went from mandolin as a side to be a “multi-instrumentalist” with my banjo playing and rhythm guitar and playing standard guitar picks to Ben’s free (maybe 1.2mm), to a Fender Heavy and a couple of Tortex triangles in the 1-1.5mm range, and settled with the CT55, too fast - having been primarily a banjo player until recently. I’m suddenly consumed with the mandolin and think about it when I am working, etc. I still make a point to play the banjo every day, but 3/4 of my time is mando, and I recently bought a used satin MF, and have a hard time leaving it in the morning. I didn’t notice that either pack included a ToneSlab. They are even higher than a BlueChip at $45 - which both turns me off and intrigues me. If I were to add one to the pack, it would be the one closest to the CT55, because it’s the best all around that I have tried for me at the moment. I’m going to a BanjoBenClark event on the first of June, and may be able to have them bring several to demo (they sell them). If I buy one for the cause (which I think is spectacular), would that be a good addition? If anyone has tried and compared one, I’d love to hear reviews, and am open to another variety if the conventional wisdom thinks of a different model.

TX2AK, welcome! The samplers have grown large, it’s no longer a requirement to add picks, it’s fine if you do but not required.

Tone slabs are on my to do list here, it was suggested that I reach out to them and see if they might be willing to donate a couple.

    Adding you to the list.

There are not many requirements for receiving the samplers. Here they are:

~ An address and phone number will be required when it is your turn to receive the sampler. You will be contacted when your turn comes up. Your personal information will be deleted afterward, and never shared with anyone other than myself and the person who is sending you the package.

~ You are asked to post to this thread when you receive the sampler to let us know it arrived safely.

~ Adding picks to the samplers is great, but no longer required, as these samplers are already pretty large.

~ Keeping picks from the sampler is not allowed, let's give everyone the opportunity to try them all.

~ Please communicate with us in the event of any delays; i.e., if you're unable to pass the package along after a couple of weeks.

Thanks everybody for keeping this thing going strong. Happy picking!

I'm getting ready to mail out #2 to Southern Man. The weight is such that I can mail first class. Should these be insured (I'm happy to do so)? If so, what's a good value?

UPDATE: The picks are on their way to Southern Man. I did end up insuring them for $200, though how successful a claim would be if they got lost is up for debate. It only cost me $1.50, so I decided not to overthink it.

I did a little extra sorting, but could have done more if I'd been looking at the Strings & Beyond pick page while I was doing it. My favorite remained the mystery buffalo horn pick, though there were a number of others I liked. I took some photos and notes. I added two horn picks that I acquired while pursuing the mystery pick - a Golden Gate MP20 and a Rocky Mountain Slides TPBuff #101. Neither one was that close.

I didn't really have time to test out picks on all my instruments. Mark, can I get on the list for #1? If someone else who hasn't had a chance comes along, though, I'd be fine with them going ahead of me.

Thanks to everyone involved in getting this going again, it was fun and eye-opening.

Sue, you’ll be added to the list for #1 immediately. The only caveat to receiving both samplers is that I’ll try to spread them out so no one gets both at once. Since you’ve just had #2 you’ll be added to list for #1, no problem.

Enivrer, you’re added. The lists will be updated Monday.
