I'll be sending off Sampler #1 to Colorado in the next couple days. I was waiting for some Charmed Life Picks to arrive to add to the collection. I ran into CLP owner, Scott Memmer, at Wintergrass and told him about the Samplers. He offered to donate some picks once I got the Sampler. Nine CLPs arrived today. There are three 1.5mm large triangles: Black Aerospace, Brown Vespel, and Red Flame Casein. There are two Dawg-GG picks in Brown and Black, and four different types of tear drops in Blonde, Brown, Black, and Casein.

I really like the Large Triangles for both guitar and mandolin. The CLP's are great. The Flame Casein is so smooth off the strings... just flows. The Brown Vespel is the same as a Blue Chip CT55. I really like the Black, too, similar to the Vespel.

I'd like to post picture, but I don't have a hosting service.

That’s great news, ZI. Is there any chance these picks can be divided so both samplers will have some? If so, and you’d like help with that, send me a PM.

A hosting service is not necessary to post a pic here, you can host the photo here. Use the photograph icon in the reply window tool bar, it’s next to the filmstrip icon. However, if you are browsing with the mobile skin, this won’t work. I just always view full site on my phone, not the mobile skin (which is buggy). If you’re on mobile, you can switch to full site view at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps.

We can split them up, so both Samplers have CLPs.

    I'll PM you, Mark.

There are not many requirements for receiving the samplers. Here they are:

~ An address and phone number will be required when it is your turn to receive the sampler. You will be contacted when your turn comes up. Your personal information will be deleted afterward, and never shared with anyone other than myself and the person who is sending you the package.

~ You are asked to post to this thread when you receive the sampler to let us know it arrived safely.

~ Adding picks to the samplers is great, but no longer required, as these samplers are already pretty large.

~ Keeping picks from the sampler is not allowed, let's give everyone the opportunity to try them all.

~ Please communicate with us in the event of any delays; i.e., if you're unable to pass the package along after a couple of weeks.

Thanks everybody for keeping this thing going strong. Happy picking!

    Some news:

The Charmed Life Picks for sampler #2 will be forwarded to Markb98 soon, he is next up to receive Sampler #2 in a couple weeks.

Something good is cooking: It appears that Tone Slab picks will be added to each sampler in the near future. More info on this at a later date.

Currently nerding out with sampler #1. Learning a lot about which picks I like. I’ve got it down to about 5 favorites. I expected to want a CT Blue Chip after this but I’ve figured out I prefer a more rounded edge to get the right combo of melodic clarity and tremolo smoothness. It’s great for melody but I struggle to get a smooth tremolo with it (I’m not the best at tremolo). “The Hawk” is ranking highly, as is a nondescript white one, fender extra heavy, a gravity pick and a few others. I’ll report back when I refine my preferences further and send it on!

The #1 pick sampler arrived in southern Arizona today in good order. Thank you, mandognome! Wow, it looks like it should be renamed the "Traveling Pick Cornucopia!" I'll put them to use soon and let you all know what I learn . . . .

Sampler #2 is on its way to Lucy Lindblom. Thanks for this opportunity. It was great to go through so many different options. The BC Tad 40 was my favorite of the bunch, but tons of good ones in the pack.

The Traveling Pick Sampler #1 is leaving southern Arizona, off to Denis Kearns.

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the collection or the management of this grass roots program! It’s amazing to see and use a big swath of the plectrums available in the market. Being able to switch back in forth “in the comfort of your living room” is a real opportunity.

Not sure if my thoughts will help folks—there’s so much written—but a few reactions. I’m a “big, rounded triangle” player, with Wegen and the Jim Dunlap 1.4 Primetones as my current go-to picks; “playing the field”—I made a point to go out of my usual comfort zone--didn’t change my general preference.

Unsurprisingly, it was the expensive picks that really got my attention. The larger Charmed Life casein pick is a thing of beauty and pulls a lovely darker tone from my 2007 Collings MT, an instrument which, as you would expect, tends towards the bright side. And the smoothness of the BC picks and the equivalent Charmed Life picks are amazing; for me they especially help with tremolo. They also shine with my electric four string mandolin, where any little pick edge roughness shows up as noise in the signal.

Like JonDoug, I really like the CLP casein large triangles as well as the CLP and BC Vespel large triangles on mandolin and guitar. I bought a CLP Vespel 1.5 "sea turtle" pick right after I sent the sampler off to mandognome. It has slightly steeper bevels compared to my old BC CT55. The sea turtle compares nicely to my super smooth CLP casein. They both sound great on everything accept my J45, where the D'Andrea Pro Plec 346 large triangle gives a a more staccato "thumpier" tone. The D'Andreas tend to potato chip after a few months, but they're cheap enough that it doesn't matter much.

Thanks to Mark Gunter for taking over the logistics of the Samplers and to Scott Memmer of Charmed Life Picks and Matthew Goins of Blue Chip Picks for their generous donations!

I’ve posted my review of a few selected picks from Sampler #1 (see below)
I did not test all 166 picks, but concentrated on those highly recommended (Blue Chip, Wegen, Primetone), those I already liked (Fender x-heavy celluloid triangles), materials I had yet to try (Charmed Life’s casein, Timber Townes’s natural resin) , and the interesting Dogal picks, which are reputed be good for playing classical mandolin. I sampled others in the collection, but concentrated on evaluating the difference between the ones shown here: Click image for larger version.

Bottom line, I’m not fond of Blue Chip, but may reevaluate for OM and mandocello. On the regular mandolin, mandola, and tenor guitar, I found the BC sound to be a bit muddy and muted. Maybe BCs sound better when one is wailing away on some bluegrass tune, but I tend to play quieter and my tastes run to O’Carolan, Irish, Americana, and whatever else strikes my fancy. In the photo, “muddier” picks are on the left and they get cleaner or brighter as you go right. Sweet spot for me is in the middle. I will continue to use Wegens, various celluloid picks (Fenders are nice and inexpensive) and plan to purchase some Casein picks (can get two Chris Thile for the price of one Charmed Life), and some Dogal #3s (very inexpensive). May get rid of my BC, if I can figure out where I put it!
Lots of interesting picks. I did not like the really thick ones (2mm+) and avoided the thinner picks, but found that, by playing carefully, I could get a decent sound out of most of the others. Also discovered that, by holding a cheap thin pick on top of a BC, I got a better sound from the cheap pick (maybe by adding mass and damping vibration?).
Thanks to all who have made these pick samplers a reality! My pick review is available on YouTube where you can see my cool Strad-O-Lin Venetian and my Phil Crump OM. I’m also modeling one of the wonderful shirts that Sue made for us Strad-O-Lin aficionados.

    Enjoy….or suffer through… your choice!

Note Dennis that the radius on a BC makes (IMO) a big difference. I use the radius on a 35 1R for my old Gibby A, whereas I like the point on my dreadnaught and generally find the pointed tip too strident on my mandos. I think if there was a radiused BC in the sampler there would be more converts. YMMV of course.

Yeah, I figure that there must be a good reason why so many folks love the BC picks. It may be that I just haven’t figured out the best angle to use with them. So many variables: pick material, shape, edge, angle of attack. I really liked the casein pick I tried, so am ordering a few from different vendors. Wish they were cheaper!

Thanks for your 2 cents. Will revisit my BC, once I figure out where it is!
