    Default Thile and Sutton

Question: Is Thile using a Mando pickup here
or is that all mic? Does anyone know?

After all these years I still watch this at
    least once a week...
    The musicianship is unreal.
    These guys are tone monsters.

"Not all who wonder are lost" is still probably my favorite .
But then again they're all my favorite. All of Thile's
    projects have been really great.

No, there is no pickup involved for the mandolin. In this (awesome) video, Thile is playing his Dudenbostel F5 into a microphone, positioned roughly over the lower f-hole of his mandolin. It's a bit below, and to the right, of his right hand, and about 8-12" away. You can see the microphone location at the very start of the video, and even better in the close-up around 1'04". His picking is incredibly clean!

I bet not. Looks like his schedule is so packed up with projects and shows...no time and i bet no interest.
Amateurs practice until they can play it right.
Professionals practice until they can't play it wrong.

They were so young then. I'm still waiting for their duet album. Monster players both. It is always a pleasure to see either one in concert. R/
    I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...

I was driving to work yesterday listening to the Bob & Tom Show and it dawned on me that hostess Christy Lee has the same name as Chris Thile. Wonder if she plays mandolin?

Them 6 years later. Other than their incredible attire change the only other big difference would be Thile's mandolin change.

Not exactly. Chris Thile pronounces his last name with a "th" sound, as "THEE-LEE," and not as "TEA-LEE." So "Christy Lee" does not sound like "Chris Thile," even when you run both first and last names together.

    Here's a video of the man himself:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdhVC0DzfFY

In the first few seconds, Chris introduces himself as Chris "THEE-LEE".

If you have a video of him, pronouncing his name as TEA-LEE, I'd love to hear it.

The only person Ive ever heard pronounce it Tee Lee was Kym Warner with an Australian accent.

I've heard it pronounced every way imaginable, including rhyming it with 'style' and 'steel'.
I'm gonna accept that Chris knows how to pronounce it correctly.

Having said that, I remember a TV ad from the 1970s. Evidently, Chef Boyardee didn't know how to pronounce his own name.

    So...who knows?
