Default Gibson EM-200: Changed through the years?

Gibson produced the EM-200 between 1954 and 1971. I've had the opportunity to play only one, a 57/59 (can't remember)... i'm wondering if anybody can comment on changes, were there any differences in materials / electronics / quality through the years?

I'm planning to get one as soon as we are debt free (it's coming...), but in the absence of trying several others (the most likely purchase is on line, although of course you never know...) I'm wondering if i should go for the the first one I can afford, or if there are qualitative differences over the years.

Also, anybody know how many were made in black? Super-sexy...

Older ones have the cloud tailpiece and non-wraparound pickguard. Later ones have the Loar-style tailpiece and wraparound pickguard. There are also some changes in knobs and knob placement over the years.
