Frédéric Chopin: Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 35 (1837/39)
No. 3a: Lento (Marche funèbre) - Interlude
Arranged for mandolin ensemble by Giuseppe Bellenghi (1847-1901).
This is the major key interlude to Chopin's Funeral March, arranged for mandolins by one of the instrument's early Italian pioneers, Giuseppe Bellenghi. In Chopin's original piano version, the interlude is in Db major, but Bellenghi transposed it into G major which sits much nicer on mandolin.
I'm rather excited by this arrangement, which I found in the Nakano collection: it's the bit in the Funeral March that normally gets left out as it doesn't fit the mood, but it's just a gorgeous melody, it sits beautifully on mandolin, and Bellenghi's arrangement is a joy to play! I attach the PDF in case other want to try it.
Played as a mandolin quartet (two mandolins, mandola and tenor guitar).
