Perhaps the BEST builder of mandolins today... if not, then lives in the same room as the most revered.... amazing tone, amazing craftmanship.... hand carved, hand cut.... simply beautiful.

I've always admired your workmanship and attention to detail.

    #41 is simply stunning.

I've never seen a Wiens in person, but boy would I like to. At Trevor's wonderful TAMCO in Brighton, England I played a Gilchrist and an Ellis, and fell in love twice in the space of a few minutes. I suspect a Wiens would do the same to me.

Jamie's creations are widely regarded as 'possibly' the closest you'll get to 'the' mandolin tone that most of us long for. However - as in all things,it's a matter of personal opinion - but i'd sure as hell like to get my hands on one !!!!. They're amongst the most beautiful mandolins i've ever seen, & i've seen quite a few in the 10 years i've been on here.Take a look at the 'currently available' #41 on Jamie's website & drool away,

From Shaun Garrity - "Don't believe everything you read..... ". I don't,but if i read far more 'positive' remarks than 'negative' remarks,i can usually draw my own conclusions. After all,it's not everybody who thinks that 'Loars' are the best mandolin out there. As i said,i'd like to get my hands on one to be able to hear for myself - that's a long way from blindly accepting the opinions of others, even the 'detractors',

I've got a question and I want to emphasize: THIS IS NOT HATE!....I'll say it again, THIS IS NOT HATE!

Now the question because I would really like to know because I am ignorant (without knowledge) in this matter:

What professional mandolinists play a Wiens? If one or two can be identified then maybe I can listen to some recordings...btw, the website and particularly the page on the Wiens F5 are impressive. Interesting that he chooses spirit varnish vs. oil based as I thought oil based is what the Loars have...

    Thanks OldGus!

Are there any videos of Dan playing his in a band setting so I can get an idea of how his "cuts through" in relation to the other instruments?

I'll watch these videos as I'm definitely curious!

Not that I know of, I think he is more of a soloist and into Irish/Old Time music. Here is one of another player testing it out and he has a few more solo videos on his YouTube channel... .Dan's has a Virzi.

Nothing wrong with either instrument I heard; as the guy from Gryphon noted, defintely on the "bright" side...I'd like to get a sample of each with heavy strings and a real thick-heavy pick, and my own tweaked set-up to really be able to gauge the tonality to my tastes...nothing here that I heard alarms me in anyway...but I personally wasn't "wowed" like when I heard Ronnie McCoury's Gil or Reischman's Loar for the first time, YMMV...the old addage still holds true, ya got to play'em...
