Default Mandolin Tab for Bach Invention #4

Not sure whether this is the right forum, but I put together a mandolin arrangement of Bach's Invention #4 this morning and thought I would share it. The PDF is attached.

If anybody would like the mandola version, let me know and I will post it as well. The tab is the same, obviously, but the notation is different (equally obviously). For those who read music rather than tab, that sometimes makes a difference.

    Happy Thanksgiving,
    Mike

Well, that's a hoot. Thank you. I'll try transcribing the counter point into Band In A box. Half Switched-on-Bach!

Thumbs up Re: Mandolin Tab for Bach Invention #4

Mike, I'm really enjoying this piece, great exercise. I've created a tabledit version of your arrangement for those who use that software, hope you don't mind my offering it to them. It is as accurate a representation as I was capable of making. I made this for myself so I could hear the piece in MIDI, and I changed one fingering, using 1st fret A string instead of 8th fret D string. Thank you for sharing this arrangement, very helpful!

Has anybody picked up on this piece? I've only gotten as far as measure 21 at this time, and I'm trying to decide the best way to play measures 19 - 21 on mandolin. Those have 1 dotted quarter note in each measure (3/8 time sig) . . . They could be played as tremolo doublestops, or some variation thereof . . . or simply plucked and left to ring out for three beats. Anyway, it'd be great to get some suggestions from more seasoned players on what to do with that.

Funny you should ask, I'm still struggling with it. When I'm practicing this slowly, I usually tremolo those three measures; if played fast enough, you can get away with just letting the notes ring out. I worked on this one a bit today again, it's still a work in progress for me. This is one of two Bach pieces I'm struggling to learn, and they are beautiful pieces. A nice digression from the fiddle tunes and such, which is what I play most often.

I tried something different this morning that might be a possibility. I'm tremolo the E and let the c ring

Since that E walks up to F and G, I've tried the opposite, tremolo on the C while walking up the D string. Still struggling with the best way to do this. If I can ever get the entire piece under my fingers, I think I'll record/film it to see from a viewer's standpoint which treatment works best on those three measures. I don't get enough sustain for that c note to ring through all three measures.

Yea I think it really needs the doublestop tremolo. Which of course gives me something to work on

Circling back on this as I recently tweaked a few of the voicings to better suit my small hands and also added some staccato markings and a tremolo marking (which I view as entirely optional, since I can't do it satisfactorily) in the measures being discussed above. Not that it matters, but in the interest of completeness I thought I would go ahead and post the updated version.

Mainly I wanted to try MuseScore (now version 3) and this was a good excuse to do so. I found it to be incredibly user-friendly.

If I ever get around to recording this thing, I'll post it here.

I’ve played this piece many times and even performed it with Caterina Lichtenberg at a music camp. All the notation I’ve seen for this has it in 3/4 time with mostly eighth notes. The bars you’re mentioning are written as a three bar continuous trill. The second voice takes the melody during this part.
