Default Deke Dickerson's Western Swing Weekend with Scotty Broyles!

If you're in Seattle or Portland, here's a rare chance to scratch the e-mando and Western swing itches. San Diego's Scotty Broyles, 87, owns and still plays the Jim Harvey 5-string electric mandolin that inspired Tiny Moore to order a similar instrument from Paul Bigsby.

Scotty will be on stage with Deke Dickerson and the Pete Krebs Western Swing Band this weekend: Friday night at Seattle's Sunset Tavern and Saturday at Duff's Tavern in Portland.

I'll try to make the Seattle show. Hope to see ya there.

It was very cool. Got to meet and talk to Scotty for a few minutes. Great guy, good player, very cool 5 string mandolin, with a Bigsby pickup, sounded very much like Tiny Moore's Sacremento recordings with Billy Jack Wills.

Another thing that very much interested me personally was he was using the same amp I use for giging, a Quilter Micro Pro 200 with the 8" speaker. We talked about that a bit. Scotty said this was the third gig he used it on, Ive had mine for a few years now. I was telling him about my experience with setting the nobs and he shared with me what he liked so far, so that was very cool. I was very interested in what sound he was after vs the sound I shoot for.

Scotty played good strong solos, was very engaging on stage and you could tell he was really digging playing the gig. Had the crowd in his hands.

I was very impressed by Deke Dickerson. Great singer, front man, guitar player! The Pete Krebs Band was very good, especially the steel player and guitar player. Overall, the most entertaining show Ive seen in a good while. Thanks Martin for posting this!!!

Sorry Spruce, I tried to make sure Pete M. & Pete G. knew about the show, but I could have thought of sending you an email or something.

Scotty hung in there with guys half his age. His mandolin was built by Jim Harvey, one of his Navy buddies, who made a few other cool guitars in the '50s, notably the Paul Buskirk doubleneck that Deke is playing in the above clip.

The story goes that Tiny Moore saw Scotty's mandolin at Bigsby's place while it was waiting for that pickup, and asked Bigsby to make his a 5-string as well. So Scotty's mandolin is a real piece of history.

What also impressed me about Scotty is that he's still sharp as a tack when it comes to stage patter. He was right on every cue that Deke gave him, and displayed fantastic comic timing.

The steel player, Russ Blake, had a triple-neck original Bigsby. Deke owns a 1949 Bigsby guitar that originally belonged to Butterball Paige (Ernest Tubb's lead player) and later was owned by Thumbs Carllile (Little Jimmy Dickens). He had it restored at Retrofret not long ago. I thought perhaps it was the Bigsby he was playing last night -- but if it was, then he's had the pickguard and knobs swapped out since the restoration. Maybe it was a replica ... if I happened to own an original Bigsby guitar I'd be nervous as hell about flying with it.

At any rate it was a bit of a geekfest as well as being a fun show.

    Thanks all...!

I'm on a bit of a Tiny/Bigsby roll these days, and am seriously in love with the warm hollow sound of a single-course mandolin with a Bigsby neck pickup through a good amp...
    Think "Back to Back"...

Sounds like I missed the show of the year...
