I noticed it too. Love the bound f holes. The neck angle is a little steep.

Trevor has had a rather battered electric version for some time - http://www.theacousticmusicco.co.uk/...andolins-.html

My recollection is that they have a somewhat restrained and quiet sound.

This is another one. I was asked to restore this by a friend. It was a basket case; someone had nailed a six-string De Armond pickup onto the end of the neck, the tuners were seized beyond repair, and it had various other problems (like loose braces and some binding going astray). I cleaned it, and realised it could be salvaged. It had sentimental value to my friend, and this is the result. The 'Rosetti' label on the headstock is the name of the music shop in London who originally sold it to my friend's late father. It sounds surprisingly good; not over-loud, but with more sustain than most mandolins. Click image for larger version.

So is it pronounced "Hoy-er" or "Hoy-ay"?

Hoy-er. German company, established in 1874. They made some very nice archtop guitars in their time, and the mandolins were an offshoot of that line. They are essentially miniature archtops with eight strings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoyer_Guitars. John Hegley, the UK performance poet plays one in his stage show.

Thanks bbcee. It was a bit of a labour of love, but the results were worth it. I had to put new tuners on; Stewmac replicas, but if I was doing it again I'd probably look for a smaller version of the closed back Klusons to keep the archtop vibe going.
