We like the mando, but the seller needs to come home from Fantasyland and knock $2K off the price.

It is an A4 is in (hopefully) superb condition for $3400. If you knocked $1K that would be retail price. I think for $1400 would be a bargain if it didn't need any work.

    Let's compromise and say $1900. It's mid-teens, 1915 or thereabouts. I don't think it's worth more than $2K without a truss rod.

The seller originally had this a bit higher, in snakehead territory, if memory serves.

It may be the lighting, but the finish on this looks like it has completely retained its color intensity.

Could be the camera angle, but I thought this view of the nut / action looked curious, as if the strings were almost resting on the frets.

Your question caused me to wonder -- if this mandolin has not been out of its case since 1935 why does it have pretty fresh looking bronze wound strings on it?

That mandolin has been on eBay for a while now with no buyers.

The G course does indeed look like its sitting a little high on the nut. The others look OK. And I wouldn't say those strings look fresh. Not green, but not fresh. And I agree that the asking price is high. They may be hoping to attract a collector.

I think it was P.T. Barnum that said "There's a collector born every minute" but I could be wrong.

It's in good shape. It's not a museum piece by any stretch. There's a fair amount of plectrum wear on the top; the headstock has grime and fingerprints and goodness-knows-what-else all over it; the silk is gone from the case hinges and the handle is a replacement; there might be some finish damage on the back. A collector who wanted this wouldn't be a very fussy collector.

    I sure do.
The mandolin looks real nice, and assuming the neck has not warped during 35 years of being constantly subjected to the full tension of heavy gauge strings, it should make a lovely player off the bat.
