NICE, John. Thanks for sharing. I use the JP winder (mostly because it's such a cool little tool) and it's helpful to know there is a back-up.

i used to do it with plyers and a nail(rather than a screw driver). but now i use a portuguese string winder. i'll have to try the jp winder sometime.

Beyond the waldzither, wouldn't this work for using a ball-end string in instruments with loop end tail pieces? You could put the ball end up on the headstock and make the loop for the tail piece on the other end.

Yes, it would work. Trip is not to wind it too tight as it breaks - particularly the heavier strings..... or too loose, then it unravels... but practice makes sort of perfect

I guess it could be even used the other way round - who said the ball end can't be the one being clipped off after winding the loop? But once you're there, the question arises why you had ball-ends in the first place, and not just bulk string wire.

Yes, but it's easy to just cut out the ball so you're left with a loop-end

It's easy to cut out the ball with larger gauge strings. Anything below .010 and I've had a hard time with the old clippers not cutting the string too!

Search the floor for the pieces of ball that you cut out. The little blighters can fly for an amazing distance.
