Default Grandpa's Song List to Sing to Little Children

This coming May I'm going to be a first-time Grandpa and I'm pretty excited. I've been playing the Mandolin for a year now and I want to start a library of funny songs to sing to the little one. The baby is going to be a boy so any song with goobers, frogs, mud....the stuff his mom might roll her eyes at!

If you have them, or know where to find them, please help my list:
    a) Songs,
    b) Books
    c) Internet / You Tube links

    Thank you!!

Well...interestingly enough I just wrote a song about my 4 year old pooping in the front yard and eating his boogers...

Might be more fun to write your own
“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around and play mandolin.”

My granddaughters' favorite lullaby is "Chesty Puller was a fine Marine and fine Marine was He"

I'm the grandpa nanny for a 5 year old and a 9 month old, both girls. Both are big fans of Barnyard Dance. We also do Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens and Straighten Up and Fly Right.

You could try 'Man of Constant Sorrow', his Mom's going to roll her eyes at that, but better still, it's great song for jumping up and dancing! Here's a lesson:

You could also do an internet search using the name of songs or even just a phrase from a song with 'tab' afterwards for the lyrics and tablature (often guitar).

Rise Up Singing from the group Sing Out is a great starting point.
Compact and clear and arranged by theme too.

Folks keep singing this as a cheerful song. If you sign more than just the chorus, it's pretty dern sad.

Check out Trout Fishing in America: http://www.troutmusic.com/

I've seen/heard kids play their CD's over and over. And the music is intelligent enough that it is not annoying.

'Rise Up Singing', there's a wonderful book! Every time we learned a new song, my daughter (two years old then) would colour in the beautiful line drawing for that song.

"The Barnyard Dance" is a good one. Learn the Martin, Bogan, Armstrong version, not the other one.

Maybe try "Pig in a Pen" and change the last lines in the verses where they call a name...

For example, "...sweet little Liza Jane." [from the song]
changes to "...sweet little Sara Jane." or "...sweet Miranda Jane."

Something like that, you get the drift I'm sure. They like hearing their name in a song...works on my grandchildren, at least...
