The first time I saw Marty Stuart was when he was very young and playing with Lester Flatt at the Watermelon Park bluegrass festival near Berryville, VA in the early 70's. He was in his early teens. He tore up Rawhide and made me a believer on the spot.
I found out a while back that I saw either the last or next to last show he played with Doc Watson before he went to play with Johny Cash. It was in 1980. The venue was horrible for that type of music, a big concrete arena and it was an indoor festival billed as a bluegrass festival. The acts were non bluegrass for the most part, Asleep at the Wheel, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jerry Jeff Walker and Delbert Mclinton. Doc, Merle, Marty and T. Michael appeared in the middle of that. A lot of people talked over them and were there for the loud bands. A handful of us got up front and listened.
I saw Marty Stuart a few years ago with his band. Great show and his band is really tight.

I have always been a fan of Marty Stuart. He's amazing on both the mandolin and guitar. His band, the Fabulous Superlatives, are also among the best. And from someone who almost parts his hair in a circle, Marty has nice hair.
