Thread: Different clip for clip-on mic?

Default Different clip for clip-on mic?

A little while back I bought an Audio Technica Pro 35 clip on mic. I really like the mic a lot. The problem I am having is with the clip. There is not really a convenient spot on the mandolin to clip it. The clip is too big to fit in one of the f holes.

So far, I have been clipping it onto the edge of my Tone Guard. The problem is that the gripping portion of the clip is about 1/2 inch wide, whereas the bar of the Tone Guard is only about 1/4 inch wide, so it is not incredibly stable. So far (knock on wood) it hasn't slipped off while playing out, but it has at practice when I am sitting to play.

I like the carpenter jack style attachments, but so far I have not been able to find one just by itself for use with a mic--that is, all of them I can find have a pickup or one or two have a built in (expensive) mic. I would like to find a clip that is just the c-clamp part of a carpenter jack, that I could use with the mic I already have.

No luck on my end looking online. Anyone know of anything like this? Or otherwise, any secret to getting the Audio Technica Pro 35's clip to fit somewhere stable on a mandolin?

When I used the similar ATM350 mic, I clipped it to the ToneGard around the back side, and added a small Velcro strap around one of the side bars for security.

If you want to go with a carpenter jack, there are reports here in the forum that the DPA 4099 violin clamp will work, with a bit of tape or other mod to the AT mic's gooseneck:

    http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VC4099

It's expensive for what it is, but that's true of all DPA accessories. Search the forum for any specific ideas about how to mount the AT mic in the clamp, but it should be fairly straightforward. This clamp is what I use with my DPA 4099 mic and it works fine with a ToneGard attached. You just have to find the right space for the clamp feet.

Here's what I use, it works pretty well. The hardware shown was modified to a shorter length.

Hmm... depends what mandolin. If it has a finger guard, no problem:

If not, my super-duper-almost-instant-hassle-free-fully-reversible-DPA-ATM adaption might be just what you need:

Both are very stable. Work equally well.

I use the DPA clip (sold separately from the complete mic assembly). It took a bit of work to free the Pro 35 from it's clip; I then epoxied it to the DPA. It's solid and works quite well, although I'm also having a little trouble finding a spot where the mic isn't getting whacked by my hand.

    Hey Jim,
What piece are you using there?

Ooh, maybe it's the "Guitar Clip for 4099 Condenser Microphone"?

    Brian,
That's it. I ordered the guitar clip as it was less expensive than the violin/mandolin clip and shortened it. I was going to mount mine like almeriastrings but found that the alligator style clip was so strong as to hold securely to the AT clip. I don't find the mic location to be in the way of my strumming or picking.

Nice. I'm going to try this.

Do you have a recommendation for the final length of the modded clip? Did you use a hack saw?

Are there any drawbacks that you encountered?

A hacksaw will work, I used a cutting disc on a Dremel tool. I initally made it too long and it would catch on my clothing. I then shortened it enough to prevent that. I also drilled through the cut end and glued a piece of side dot plastic rod through the drilled hole and left the nubs long enough to act as a stop. I can pop it off of my instrument or leave it on and it fits in the case fine either way.

OP here, thanks very much everyone for the responses. That clip from Sweetwater looks like exactly what I need, to give my current clip on mic something more secure to grab onto. I am ordering one today.

I am thinking the DPA GC4099 will solve my problems, too. Thanks for all the input, guys. I really like the ATP 35 and this looks like a real slick way to mount it.

Old thread, but I have a question as I''ll be getting an AT PRO 35 today to try out. Has anyone had luck just tieing the gooseneck onto a pre-existing carpenter jack that comes with the LR Baggs radius pickup?

It can be done. You might need to glue or bolt an extra attachment point to it. I have not done this myself, but I have seen it.

The carpenter jack ended up not working. However, it attached to the Tonegard just fine and doesn't move around nearly as much as I anticipated while playing. Looking forward to putting it through it's paces at a couple of shows over the weekend.

I worry that the clip will damage the varnish finish on the body. I'd much rather attach it to the pick guard like almeriastrings first pics, since I'm a finger dragger and need a guard. That said, I'm slightly worried that it might get in the way, especially when banging out rhythm chords. Have others found this to be a problem?

That is a constant worry I have. I have a tendency to flail my strumming hand like a madman at times. I'm not too concerned about finish damage on my poor KM950 as my flailing fingers have pretty much taken care of any anxiety of finish damage! If I decide to keep this mic, I will most likely get the GC4099 listed above.

    No.

You'd have to be doing a Pete Towshend windmill thing- unless you are flailing around the lower 'f' hole... I can't imagine it.

Common forum themes is a shopping question rather than a Willingness to do some DIY.

Carpenter style = a viola chin-rest clamp and a Piece of wood.
a hole is bored to take a Jack similar to what would be installed in the Instrument endblock.

Then you sort out your Mic Mount Soft wire with insulation over it then another layer over the Mic Wire perhaps?

the wire will be flexible to position your MiniMic..
