I used to think Garrison Keillor was a comedic genius. Then I met my wife, who hails from Fertile, MN, population at that time about 800 souls. It is located on the Sand Hill River in the northwest corner of the state, where the lake country gives way to the prairie. Everyrthing Keillor says about "Lake Woebegone" is absolutely true in Fertile. He's not making anything up! It is a great place and great part of my life.
Did not know Chris left New York for the west coast. Hope he does well on PHC.
I am looking forward to the new show. It has every reason to succeed.
I think Chris needs some time to calm down and settle into the role. I also think there are enough writers out there that could keep the radio theater part rolling. I'm looking forward to it.
I agree, but whether the theater part will be as important in the future is a question in my mind.
The part of the present Prairie Home Companion that I think Chris could improve upon is the interview of the musical guests. Garrison never gets past his ironic stance, and keeps it short, where I would love it if Chris had full blown interview segments, where he could be genuine, and the musical guests could be genuine. He brings a genuine enthusiasm for music and music making that is infectious, and his dual role as real musician and real fan boy, would create interviews we could all enjoy on many levels. I envision a kind of Dick Cavett of the music world.
I read a discussion between Chris Thile and Dave Grisman that was brilliant. And when Chris has been interviewed about his own projects he always seems to "go deeper" than I expect. I would love to see that depth in a regular interview segment.
With all that other stuff too.

I think you're right. The theater stuff will be scaled down from what it is now but I think there will always be some.
The deeper interviews with the musical guests is a great idea. I read the Grisman talk too and thought it was great.
Who knows, he may have plans we can't even imagine right now.

I hope Chris is successful, and I hope he can turn it into HIS show.
There's a very nice article about Garrison Keillor scheduled to be published in the New York Times Arts & Leisure section this Sunday (judging by the date in the url). But since it's available online now ... here 'tis. It mentions Chris Thile, but only in passing.

Big shoes to fill...and I hope that Chris takes the challenge, perseveres and takes it to a higher level.
I hope loyal followers enjoy Chris as much as we all enjoyed Garrison. Wishing him all the best!
Thanks, Tim, but it was really Ed "Fast Eddie" Goist who did the heavy lifting and posted it on facebook. Seemed to me a good thing to share it here - that is, to four of the threads devoted to the subject.
