    Default For Vinyl enthusiasts

Digging deep into my vinyl collection and pulled out Sam and Alan "Together again for the first time " haven’t listened to it for quite awhile, what a fine album, had to listen to it twice. Hard to find these days but grab it if it shows up. Also they released Garcia/Grisman on vinyl as an original master recording, really exceptional sound quality. Blows my cd version away, funny quote from Grisman on this vinyl release, he states that he appreciates this release because he was born in 45 and in 78 he was 33, ha. I got a kick out of that. What are you people spinning these days?

Ya that Garcia Grisman release is fantastic. I love the Wakefield Red Allen folkways release. Thinking about picking up the JD Crowe repress released on record store day and been looking for Manzanita for a while. Saw a lot of 7 TRU records including manzanita on eBay for like 70 bucks almost pulled the trigger.

Another great Dawg record I've been enjoying lately is "Mondo Mando", might be my favorite at the moment.

    Ok purchased it.

Dont have mondomando. Got early dawg (great), hot dawg, quintet 80, and mandolin abstractions. As well as old and in the way... I went on somewhat of a bluegrass record purchasing rampage the past few years. It helps most collectors don't care about grass so it is pretty cheap. Also I got a bunch of these Stanley Brothers Stanley Series, bunch of live recordings. They are fantastic. And also all the Bluegrass Album Band records are great for the collection as well.

I have LOTS of Bluegrass LP,s,just how many i can't remember, but they were bought over a long period. In fact,it wasn't until i came home from the US in 1992,that i bought a CD player with my left over holiday cash. That, plus the fact that Bluegrass on LP was getting very hard to get hold of.
There must literally be 1,000's of LPs out there not being played & lots for sale. One group of LPs well worth looking out for,are the old 'Starday' compilation LP's, LP's which had tracks by many different bands on them. Many of those bands were excellent, but vanished a long while ago ie. ''The Kentucky Travellers String Band''. Strange to say,but many of them had the words ''with 5-string banjo for collectors'' on the front cover. If you can find a good copy, try to find the first LP by The Barrier Brothers - ''Golden Bluegrass Hits''. It was the first Bluegrass i ever heard back in 1963 & it's a selection of Bluegrass 'standards' played by Ernest,Herman & Ray Barrier with Benny Martin on fiddle,Buddy Killen on bass & Willie Ackerman on drums !!. The drums are well in the background so don't be scared because the rest of the playing is 'for me' as good as it gets.
Here's the whole thing on YouTube & here are the 3 LPs they recorded :-

    There's no mandolin i'm afraid,but what's there is excellent !,

I cherish all of my vinyl records which include some of Cliff Waldron, Country Gentlemen, The Osbornes, a few Monroe albums....I do have a CD burner and have burned some onto CD`s only because I want to listen to them while in my truck, still have a few of Mac Wiseman on 45`s also...Now those are old, from the mid 50`s....

Yes Mark, I'm a vinyl enthusiast too. And while I love to spin my albums of Bill, Lester and Earl, I have to dig through a ton of Hank, Merle and Johnny to find them.

I've got both the Sam and Alan and Grisman album. Both are great. I agree the Grisman and Garcia album is probably one of the best sounding records I've heard. This past week I got a great copy of Jimmy Martin Free Born Man. Decca made some quality records, sound and physical appearance.

Great stuff, Ivan. I love hunting for LPs and 45s, and one of my crate digging rules is that if it says "Starday" on it, it's coming home with me. The label has an interesting history and through the years released a diverse selection of music, from Cajun to country western to bluegrass to rockabilly and honky-tonk. All of it is absolute gold IMO!

A few Starday records from my collection:

That was my first foray into Dawg's music. I was so struck by what I heard that I learned to play all the tunes on it, starting with Dawg Funk. A truly great album.

Was listening to Bill Monroe's "Southern Flavor" this morning. Great mix of progressive and traditional styles. Check out the tune Texas Lone Star, great Fiddle playing on that one. Next up, Tony Rice Unit "Still Inside" love Reischmans playing on that. Any other recommendations appreciated, always looking out for good vinyl. Cheers

The 'Starday' label had many styles of music available not just Bluegrass. I used to own one - ''Nashville Steel Guitar'' that i swapped with a SG playing friend of mine for an LP ''Greatest Country Fiddlers Of Our Time''.
Have a look at this page & you'll get an idea just how extensive the Starday label was :- http://www.bsnpubs.com/starday/starday100.html The really sad part is that almost none of them made it onto CD,& i'd bet that the master tapes are long gone,

A few days ago after reading the original post I went in and dug out an old Hank Snow record that I bought many, many years ago, it isn`t in stereo and it is recorded by RCA and the sound is crystal clear, I remember buying this record and marveled at how clear the sound was comparing it to some 45`s that I had....I have never heard any recordings that sounded that clear and I wonder if RCA quit recording?

I'm new here and only been playing mandolin for 5 years yet greatly improved with my loar 520. Anyway, glad to hear others mention "mondo mando" as I listen to this on vinyl once a week as I would love to learn how to play "caliente" but can't find tabs, anyone know how to play it? Also I've seen over hundreds of bands live and no musician ever blew my mind as much as grisman dunegrass 2007
