Default Travel to Austin, TX, May 1-5... jams or sessions?

Are there any good intermediate level jams or Celtic sessions in Austin, TX next week? I'll be in training during the day but would love to pick a few in the evening.

    Thanks, Paul

Rio Ritas has a Celtic and old time jam every Tuesday starting at 8 PM! I have not been in many years but it was a blast! http://www.riorita.net/events/

Check in at Fiddlers Green. Clay leads a celtic jam regularly, but I am not sure what day it is. May 5th is the monthly Beginner Intermediate Central Texas Bluegrass Association bluegrass jam. Check their website for details if you are interested.

Fiddlers Green looks like a great place to drop by even if they don't have a jam.

You're going to be in Austin on a Monday, which means that from 8-11 pm over at Radio Coffee and Beer on Manchaca and Ben White, you can catch the weekly bluegrass night. Some real solid players come out every monday a play a bunch of tunes. Grab a beer, kick back and enjoy the music.

What part of town will you be in? I guess you could grab Uber to go where you need.
Also take a look at the Austin Friends of Traditional Music website: www.aftm.us They list an Old Time Jam at Rio Rita's on Tuesday 7pm
There is a Cajun jam at St Roch's bar Saturdays early evening.
Fiddlers Green holds their Irish Session on Sunday evening.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and links, folks!

Tommando, do any of these look like something you're going to hit? The Tuesday Rio Rita thing looks like my speed... I'm not much of a Bluegrasser. Not because I don't like the music, I'm just not good enough to keep up at a serious BG jam! I'd love to sit in on the Cajun jam too, but I won't be in town on Saturday.

I know I'm going to have some job related evening work to do, but I intend to take in what I can of Austin while I'm there. I'll probably bring my Mix CF mando... it's not as loud as my Gibson, but it travels well.

Yes, having to play it by ear, but aiming for the Radio C & B on Monday night. Looks like it may be more of a concert and not a jam, but I'm a big bluegrass fan. The Riorita looks like a fun jam. Will have to see about going downtown on Tuesday night. I brought a very cheap Rogue just in case. PaulD, let's get in touch on Monday afternoon around 6 pm.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I met up with the Old Time crowd at Rio Rita on Tuesday and had an enjoyable jam. Very nice folks. I didn't make it to Fiddler's Green until my drive out on Friday, but they had a great collection of instruments. They close at 6:00, and with my training schedule and traffic into town that wasn't happening. I picked on their '23 Gibson A and a couple different octave mandos. Other than that... I wasn't able to get to any more music and I literally missed the boat trying to get a kayak rental on the river. I tried not to be too loud or obnoxious pickin' in the hotel room and airport when I had downtime.

I'll try to extend the trip to cover the weekends next time... or maybe head down to hang out rather than for a business training.

Glad your visit gave you a desire to come back. It can be hard to fit things in when on a business trip. Texas has many opportunities to jam and listen to all kinds of music, but normally it requires a drive of some distance. One of the best is the monthly "Pickin in the Park" at the square in Fayetteville an hour south of Austin...held Saturday the second weekend of the month April - November. http://texaspickinpark.com Worth the drive.

Had a good visit at Fiddler's Green yesterday. A great place to play a variety of good instruments. Great folks, too.
