I have gained quite a few mandolin licks from playing along with cds. #Right now I'm focusing on learning doublestops and kick-offs in various keys. #The cd I keep returning to is Grisman's "Bluegrass Reunion". #There is so much tasteful mando playing on there that's not at breakneck speeds, I find that I can learn something new everytime I play along. #I have many of Grisman's more jazzy cds and the Garcia/Grisman stuff too, but are there others by Grisman or anyone else that you've found to be as enlightening?

Tone Poems by Grisman/Rice is fun to play along with. A good mix of easy and more challenging songs.

I really like "Been All Around This World", the last Garcia/Grisman release. #It's worth it alone for their version of Jimmy Martin's "Drink Up and Go Home",imo.

I had fun doing this a while back with the Bluegrass Series albums. Classic bluegrass songs and Doyle does some nice stuff.

Tony Rice, The Bluegrass Album. If you can play along with this you're ready for anything. Mike

I totally agree with Frankmc, Kenny Baker plays Bill Monroe and the Kitchen Tapes are endless sources of inspiration. Another one is the Smithsonian Bill Monroe live disc.

I always like to think of the Kitchen Tapes as a virtual encylopedia of Bill Monroe/Frank Wakefield bluegrass licks. #I think that's where Grisman got a lot of his bluegrass stuff.

for a wide variety of duet style BG mandolin, up front in the mix and playable, try the Skaggs & Rice or Rigsby/Connell's Meet Me in the Moonlight.

for hardcore Monroe- the Baker Plays Monroe album, and the Kitchen Tapes are a start.

for BG standards, the BG album band releases and Grisman's Home is Where the Heart Is are full of ideas.
