Well....... JustStrings.com sells gauged singles but they usually have a 6.95$ shipping fee. I generally buy strings annually in one lump purchase so the fee is averaged and I come out ahead on the total cost. R/

With a pack of J74's costing about 7.99, I typically just buy them in pairs and then have extra's in my case, since it's not uncommon to have a string break during initial tuning.

Yeah, buying single strings from anybody is going to be a bummer on the shipping charges if you're just buying a couple of them by themselves. I do the same as you - I throw in extras of the plain strings when I buy a bunch of string sets. I usually order 5-6 sets of mandolin strings, plus guitar strings, mandola strings, and banjo strings all together. So the shipping is pretty minor in the overall cost.

Not to get off subject, but if you're breaking strings during the initial tuning, something may be wrong with the tuner post, nut, or elsewhere. I've changed hundreds of sets of mandolin strings over the years, on multiple mandolins, and I can only recall one time that an E string broke while tuning up. Breaking a string while bringing it up to pitch shouldn't be a normal occurrence.

(The only reason I buy extras of the plain strings is because I rust them out so quickly. I like to change them in between full set changes, not because of breakage.)

Only find Guitar strings in .011"? Break the ball out of a Guitar string, leaving the loop.

Or form a Loop in the opposite end ..

Loop around a nail and wind with a pair of vise-grips..

My local music store carries single strings. I would start with your local music store.

If you want loop end you will have to order them as most guitar stores carry guitar singles, but not mandolin strings. Any guitar shop can order you singles, and if you can wait until they put and order in they will be paying shipping on the whole order so shouldn't add to your order. If you can't get them anywhere send me a PM and I can get you some.

Most banjo strings are loop end and an 11 is common. They are long enough for both E's if they just had a loop on each end

It's not that hard to twist a loop on the other end.
