It's dangerous to quote something as an ' absolute ' when talking about music, this may be your opinion but it's just that.

Do you get the irony of stating an absolute in your own post?

Some honest play wear and a monster mandolin. What tone!

Gee whiz. Was just pointing out what a great band these folks are.

A friend of mine used to own Caleb's Triggs (it was a very early one). It looked a lot worse than that Sullivan.

I think that Bill Monroe would approve of the play wear on that mandolin (and of the tone of the guy who plays it).

They played at Orkney Folk festival a few years ago. Great stuff.

Caleb has a very strong and steady style (you could say the same about his instrument I guess!) and led off an open session perfectly audibly in a very noisy pub (in addition to he concerts they gave).

    I was very impressed.

I found a video of that session. Lots of random people joining in, or just yakking at the bar.
Believe me, it was even noisier in real life but Caleb was even more audible.

It's always like that Rick. Or "you should have been here last week!"
I count myself lucky to have caught that session. I know I was there because I can see myself (yakking to a friend) at the end of that clip.

I've been looking at their videos recently and suddenly noticed - he takes tremolo to an entirely new place. Anyone ever see a mandolin shake about so much before ?

Great clip. It's just that he's holding the mandolin away from his body, I suppose.

It'd be hard not to shake it if you're standing and playing like that.

Not to worry. The truth is often "dangerous" and your opinion is shared by many.

3 finger grip putting a hurt on that mandolin

Great interview on cafe including his thoughts on tremolo. Caught his band last month - I could watch him play all day
