Thread: Wedding song suggestions ?

  1. #1

    Default Wedding song suggestions ?

I need to pick a tune to dance with my daughter at her wedding in a few months. Had one or two in mind that escape me at the moment. I'll also likely play one or two later, as well. Any input is greatly appreciated !

Here's one nice tune I'll probably perform there, this guy's awesome. Enjoy:

We played "Jerusalem Ridge" at my wedding, and this was very well received. It's in a minor key, and poignant, not too fast a tempo (makes for a sentimental, not frenetic, dance!), but still filled with chances for instrumental virtuosity. Hits just the right mood, IMO.

Unless you prefer people listening to the words of a song -- and not paying any particular attention to the dancers -- you might be better off with an instrumental than a vocal.

I'm thinking more, love oriented ballad, a Father will dance to with his daughter.

"Daddy's Little Girl" of course...I was a good 5 inches taller than my Dad but I was his little girl and that's what we danced to 26 years ago next month...he's been gone for some time now but it was nice to listen to this song again...

Choose something upbeat and exciting! Something that makes others want to dance instead of cry.

This is a few degrees off topic because it's probably the most effective couple's first dance that I've heard. Granted that most folks won't recognize it (five decades too late!) but, here on the Cafe, it might stir someone's creative juices:

"Today", from Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow" album. Here's an excerpt:

    Today, everything you want
I swear it will all come true
    Today, I realize how much
    I'm in love with you
    With you standing here
    I could tell the world
    What it means to love
    To go on from here
    I can't use words
    They don't say enough

    Please, please listen to me
It's taken so long to come true
It's all for you, all for you
    - Ed

"Then one day we weren't as young as before
Our mistakes weren't quite so easy to undo
But by all those roads, my friend, we've travelled down
I'm a better man for just the knowin' of you."
    - Ian Tyson

One tune that i think would fit very well,is ''Lara's Theme'' from Dr Zivago. It's a very beautiful, haunting melody & it's played in a way that's supposed to represent the Russian Balalaika, played with a lot of tremolo. It's also played in a slow waltz tempo,so for dancing at a wedding,i'd say it's pretty spot on (IMHO). Alternatively, get your clogs on & get your rear in gear to ''Clinch Mt.Backstep'',
    Ivan
    Weber F-5 'Fern'.
    Lebeda F-5 "Special".
    Stelling Bellflower BANJO
    Tokai - 'Tele-alike'.
    Ellis DeLuxe "A" style.

"Sunrise Sunset". It really is a great mandolin tune when using a lot of tremolo and cross-picking. I hope someday to play it at my grand daughters wedding.

Oh wait: dancing with your daughter? May not be appropriate.

I am doing this song at the reception for a couple that I work with.

Blue Ridge - Side by Side

My folks played some songs at a friend's wedding a few years back, this was one of them. Went over really well.

Got to hear Alan Bibey do a solo rendition of it down at the Curryville Back 40 this past weekend, it was beautiful.

non-mandolin content, but we've done Beirut's "Postcards From Italy" a few times
accordion, uke, clarinet, maybe trumpet & trombone, and drum. me singing. loads harmonies. tbh, I think it's better than the original recording, though I've seen them do some lovely 'live' versions.

The Lover's Waltz, by Jay Ungar
I'd like to second that. We played Lover's Waltz at a friends wedding at Saengerrunde Hall in Austin several years ago. Instead of a processional, the couple waltzed down the aisle to this song. One of the highlights of my playing career. (I think Molly Mason gets a credit on that, as well.)
