Pava, 100%. Handmade not factory built
owned them both, excellent quality and build from each maker. each exhibit a distinct tonal difference and a distinct neck profile shape-those two things can make a huge difference to many people.
Both tend to have excellent fretwork, radius fretboards, and ease of setup(usually spot on nut slots, string course spacings, excellent quality bridges).
hard to go wrong with either one.
I like them both equally as well, the Collings neck profile fits my hands better, hence I tend to keep those in the house.
check out videos on TheMandolinStore for pretty good comparisons if you can't find both locally to try out. gregboyd.com(look in the sold archives as well) will have some excellent video to hear the Collings, not sure if they have a Pava around. I can send you a Pava satin finish soundclip if you send me your email.
both are huge bang for the buck, and very reasonable in cost imo.

100% personal preference. Played one Pava and several Collings at a store outside of Boston. Can't go wrong with either!
(I bought a Collings)
There was a thread recently discussing the Pava satin http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/sh...613-pava-satin
I searched the archive and found a few other threads discussing the two brands. My Pava isn't a satin model, but you can here what she sounds like here:http://thenatelee.com/instructional-videos.html and here: http://thenatelee.com/performance.html
I've played many Collings MTs and they have all been great, but nothing fits me like my Pava.

Both are fantastic mandolins. You can't go wrong with either. Other than that,

I recently purchased a 2015 Pava Satin. It is a fantastic mandolin in every way and I doubt you would be disappointed. I never played a Collings Mandolin that I didn't like either. I believe all Pava's use Adirondack tops where Collings MT use Engleman Spruce. MT2 trim level mandolin has adi.
Can someone describe the neck profile differences between the MT and the Pava? I have an MT and sometimes feel it has too much of a V for me.

As far as the "handmade" vs factory built deal, I've been to the Collings factory and seen how they do it. It's not as if some wood is fed into a machine and a mandolin comes out the other end. There is still tons of bench work that goes on. It was a truly fascinating thing to see how they do it, and I was surprised by just how much handwork it takes. If you're ever in Austin, take the tour. It's a great place and the Collings team are great folks.

I think having a machine crank out a 90% carved neck in no way detracts from an instrument. I'd love to own either, and this level of mandolin wil be my next and final upgrade.
based on what I've saw in video from both shops, and read in comments from both makers, I think both Collings and Pava use CNC and hands on for many of the same procedures in the mandolin builds.

I have a Pava Satin and a Collings MF. They're different enough for me to keep both. It's like everyone else here has said: you gotta try both and see which one you like better.
Never played a Collings, but I love my Pava! The Pava and my Weber cured my MAS- I don't think you would go wrong with a Pava.
