so do I, just sold the Collings this morning and I would have laid down a deposit when talking with Justin, but that nut width is just too tight for me I'm afraid.

And right now, as of this morning, and its all your fault Dem!

I find my self mandolinless. Yep, don't own one.

And I start Matt Flinners class Monday. Everybody laugh with me and at me because I sure am.

(I do have my daughters Weber F Gallatin custom and i'll do a small pic post later today or tomorrow. Its a 1 1/8" nut width and I took off some wood on the bridge as it was too high and limited the lowering of the action, I reseated that and manipulated the setup and I'm having a blast with this thing. it really fits and suits me very well. So honestly no rush for me on buying anything, she has let this set for a while now, moved on to basketball and soccer, so I figure it needs some care and feeding. The Weber neck has always fit me perfect, and I also started using a Wegen thin mando pick she had with it, and I'm really digging that as well. Amazing what some little changes can do to open up ones world).

It sounds very fine indeed, but like the Gilchrist Model 1 video, there's a lot of room in that recording. And the youtube link says they mic'd the room as well as the mandolin. But there was a lovely 2012 Duff that I played at Carter in April: dry, powerful, focused midrangey mando. Hard to say how similar or different this one might be.

Carter's vintage is my favorite store of all time. I was there last March and they had two Duff F5s, I would have been happy to own either.

That Duff really sounds outstanding. I think Carter's has gotten good at mic'ing; I've seen recordings in the past where it's much harder to come away with a good idea how the instrument sounds, and this is pretty good.

if that's the Duff i played there last November/December with the unique figure on the back that mandolin is outstanding. Another one of those mandolins I nearly bought right on the spot. If it's not that one it's just another great sounding A by Duff... great stuff. Hey, there's a slogan for ya... Duff... great stuff!

I just listened to this video with a nice set of headphones and while I'm sure it's a fine sounding mandolin, it sure is hard to tell from the sound quality. The audio is terribly compressed and sounds awful to my ears. I know Marc and he can certainly pull a fine tone out of a mandolin but you would never know it by listening to this. Am I hearing something different than everyone else is hearing? Listen with headphones and maybe you will hear what I am talking about.

Well, now I feel like a real dope. I just found out the problem was my headphones. I listened to something else of which I know is excellent quality and it sounded bad as well. I used another set and it sounded fine. So, you all were right, that Duff is a great instrument. Sure good to hear Marc play.

Mic is so good I can hear cars passing by in the street outside at the 1:26 mark.
Youtube compresses audio on lower video resolutions. To get the best audio you should select the highest video resolution available.
    Great sounding mandolin and player!

    Here's another for you:

The Duff nut is just 1/32" narrower than on the Weber. Would you even notice?

I think I would. I'm just now dropping down to 1 1/8" from having 1 3/16" for the past 1.5 years. I've got to have the right neck profile to make it all work, my hands are that touchy-wish they were not.

Also, that's too much $ for me at this time to invest, I just spent my free funds on a weissenborn I've been looking out for the past 6 years. And I've just about got to where I hate shipping anything and taking a chance on it arriving. Never had an issue, but after 10 years of guitars and now mando's, I'm tired.

    That's the American spelling variation . . .
Here we spell it MAŁ . . . but it's pronounced the same.
    Refrets, I've had a few . . .

Frankie Belle is a great tune that was written by Molly Cherryholmes and recorded by Rhonda Vincent. I played it with a band for a few years and am thinking of doing it again with my current band. I'm not actually sure if Molly recorded it herself but I think she played fiddle on Rhonda's recording.
