"Standing in the Shadows of Motown" is on Netflix (might be DVD only). It's a great documentary about the Funk Brothers, the house band behind many of the Motown hits. Nobody laid down a bass line like James Jamerson.

The funk Bros doc is great, as is the mussel shoals doc - shouldn't be missed. "This ain't no mouse music" was also a favorite of mine. There were a couple of others I saw last year that i was quite fond of, but I can't remember ...

There are some other great docs I would recommend - outside of music.

They used to have all the Flatt & Scruggs shows. I wish they would bring them back.

I just watched "The Winding Stream", a Carter Family documentary last night. Nothing groundbreaking, but enjoyable none the less.

The Jaco Pastorious Documentary is very good. I particularly liked that it did not focus on the last, tragic years of his life but rather chose to focus on his upbringing and when he was at the height of his powers. Of course, everything about Jaco has to address his very sad decline, but choosing not to focus on that was a good call, IMO.

The Eagles Documentary is very long and very in depth. I highly recommend it when you need to kill 3 hours.

The Other One, a Documentary about Bob Weir, is excellent.

Not a documentary but a really good, strange, funny movie; "Look Whose Talking". It's premise is that Hitler wakes up in modern day Germany. It's subtitled but after a few minutes it gets less annoying. It is fun to watch.

I'll second "This Ain't No Mouse Music". About a hero who saved rare American music from being lost in obscurity.

I enjoyed that one a great deal, especially the Cajun music segments.

I hope it's been seen by all - but on the chance one hasn't... bela's banjo epic in west Africa is superlative. Although I don't think it's been on NF for a long while - it was a few years ago..

Wrecking crew was great. And that levon helm too.

Note, the Tom Petty doc is just as long as the Eagles doc - and an excellent film. Even if you're not a big TP fan, you might really enjoy it. A lot of info on Tom from a teenager, and on the Heartbreakers history . . . Tom's battles with the record labels deserves mucho respect, info on Stevie Nicks and others, info on the Wilburys . . . an epic documentary.

There is a Chris Thile documentary, called "Making of a Band", IIRC. Kind of fun and informative.

Once you start watching the music shows Netflix will be suggesting more of the same for you. There are a bunch or really good one's. I think I have watched most mentioned here and then some. I may not be as much of a junkie as Mark, but enjoy them a lot. The Honky Tonk Man with Clint Eastwood is a great movie, Clint sings.
