I've seen similar threads on guitar forums.

I've never named my instruments anything other than functional names, like:

    (keeping it to mandolins)

    the Vietnamese mandolin

the Greek (Sakis) bowlback mandolin, aka the "other bowlback".

    the cheap Kay archtop

    the vintage "Carl Fischer" bowlback

    the Cümbüs, mandolin

    My wife uses terms like:

    the old mandolin

    the "yellow" (natural?) mandolin

    and so on

I have one named "Crusher" and another named "Hoss". My campfire beater is sometimes called "Ms. Griffith" by some people, but I just call it my campfire mandolin.

I have one I call "Little Buddy", it seems a natural epithet for it since I take him just about anywhere to keep me company when I have a spare minute or two . . . can't help but think of Gilligan, though, when I call the mandolin Little Buddy

    Hey Mark,
Isn't it the best feeling to have a mandolin with just about you everywhere you go? It's true I find myself reaching for that instead of myself phone when I have those moments through the day. Like I was waiting at VW for an oil change and so I pulled out my mando "Jaws". Everyone else in the waiting room was on a cell phone. They looked at me like I was an alien.

    As I said back then:

There is Floyd, and Lloyd, and Merle; and then there is Kyle and Lyle and Earl, and then Connie, and Bonnie, and Pearl. Then there is a tenor guitar named Andrew Jackson, and a tenor banjo named Daniel Webster, and a fiddle named Wille. Oh, and the ukulele banjo, named Pip.

    Nah. I'm kidding. I don't name them.

I had a small piano accordion once, named Irene. Someone had glued mailbox lettering on the front - thats how I knew her name.

I can never sell one after I've named it ... and they all have names. I usually use female names related to the builder, struggling with the Dudenbostel, I call her "the Dude" most the time, but keeping a mind to a more feminine name, which means she's not officially named yet ... The point is, for me, they gotta have names, gives them personality and character.

I call my mandolin "Bear" and my acoustic guitar "Eleanor". The first instrument I ever played was given to me to by my uncle and it had the name of "Maggie J" so I couldn't call it anything different. It also instilled in me that my instruments must be personified otherwise they are soulless.....

Isabella, after Isabella Rossellini. Why you say, because they both have great curves. That's why.

I had the builder inlay the name into the headstock. It says "Breedlove". Cost a little more, but it was worth it.
