Default Archtop Build Journal - Fifth Edition

I posted about the Archtop Build Journal back a couple of years ago:
    http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/sh...+build+journal

I have continued to build and learn, and updated the Journal as I went. Here is the Fifth Edition, with more details about plate carving, neck carving and finishing. I hope it encourages others to try building and sharing what they learn online.

Wow, Mike! Comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, and fun to read. Can't wait to get an hour or two to myself, and a cup of coffee. What a treat.

Very, very kind of you to invest all that work, and then offer it up for free. Do you have a tip jar?

    Thank you!

Kirby, Thank you for your kind words. I have found and continue to find so much good information and inspiration on MC and other sources, and it is an honor to be able to offer something back for all I have gained.

I can't thank you enough for this build journal. It's incredible how much work you put into this project, and the detail in your account is amazing. My friend recently asked me if I would like to try building him a mandolin, and, having never built any kind of instrument before, this is a wonderful resource that will make the project feasible.

Mike, I have some dumb questions about some of the steps. First, is it okay I ask and is it okay I post them here in case it helps others as well?

Stompbox: Sorry about the slow reply - been traveling and away from forums.

It is absolutely OK to post the questions here! In fact, it has been my hope that curious folks would ask for clarification and even challenge the methods I've documented. There are usually more than one way to accomplish a task, and MC especially has been a great place to share our knowledge. The dialogue around the questions will help anyone who might be interested, and also give me some direction on how to continue expanding and improving the Journal.

Excellent, I will review it again to recall my questions as well as view it for more. I won't be challenging anything, lol, I am just seeking knowledge as a rookie.

Before the kids were born, I was about 70% done with a semi-hollow neck thru designed guitar. Now, 4 years later, am looking to finishing that and attempting a hollow body next year so I am trying to make. List of things to remember and ideas to use.
