Hi Nigel, two great players alright. As you know, I've just bought one of your bouzoukis from Adam. If this instrument doesn't turn me into a "bouzouki God" nothing will!!!

Just thought of another guy from Denmark, Jens Ulvsand , the bouzouki player with Danish Band Trio Mio. Very tasteful player. Check out that band by the way, really good especially their Pigeon Folk Pieces Album.

This is Trio Mio with Jens Ulvsand (guitar, bouzouki).
They now have different players in the group. More info here:

That whole "HUP" series is great, and the two of Alec with Tony Linnane and Noel Hill are among my favourites.

Hi Kevin, you're right about Alec, very understated, sympathetic playing. In my opinion, it was him that created that typical De Danann sound. His bouzouki playing was unique and its what drew me to De Danann in the first place. His playing on the classic Noel Hill and Tony Linnane album was majestic and one of my favourite albums of all timew is the one he and Frankie Gavin made. I heard they did it all in one day!! Its a classic. I used to play it before I went to school a lot. Really got me going and ready to face the day with the psycho Christian Brothers!!!!

I used to play a greek bouzouki for years and played in a style kind of like Alecs but could never quite get it. He seems to use a lot of "up" strokes which I just couldnt get the hang of. Mick Conneeley who is a fantastic fiddler also plays 6 string bouzouki and he seems to have it nailed.

Do you have any idea where Alec gets his bouzoukis Kevin and are they expensive?? My own Greek one gave up the ghost many years ago, started to cave in, took me years to get a bouzouki I was eventually happy with after that, a Joe Foley large body which I still have.

I ran across Dominique Riviere's Foggy Dew (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4f7voIo-XU&fmt=18) some months ago and have taken a liking to his arrangements - a number of which he's posted on his website for me to... ah... poorly imitate on my own instruments. Eyes Closed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjaKbI8qLf8) gets "accidentally" stuck on replay.

Paul hathaway bouzouki/mandocello. Paul's instruments very reasonably priced. Never played one myself but Michael Holmes of dervish used to play one when the band started off. Sounds pretty good. Never trust a bouzouki player who wears a hat at a rakish angle! !!!! Only joking Dominique, just typical French flair! !!!

Agreed! I used to think of Michael Holmes as "the Crump guy" but then I bought and watched Dervish's "Live at Johnny Fox's" DVD and lo and behold!

Which means he played one on some of my favourite tracks like "Cailin Rua" and "The Hungry Rock." Bit of custom work on his; GREAT sound!

A long time ago in the eighties I listened to Pat Kilbride's Rock and Roses LP a lot.
The very first track in particular had some lovely cittern. I doubt if he plays it that much now (mostly guitar?), but I don't really know.

I just thought of another player, somehow listening to Pat Kilbride brought this to mind...
Doc Rossi is a fine musician.

I usually associate Brian McNeill with the fiddle but he is also a superb CBOM player.

Ale Moller may have been mentioned, and we've covered most of the Irish / celtic CBOM players (right?). Anyway these two guys are having too much fun here and should be included.

Great Stuff Nic. Never saw that before. Love the clip of the Bothy Band especially. Just proves what I said at the start of the thread. Donal is a genius and changed the face of Irish Music forever!!!!!

Some great players have been mentioned in this thread. My favourite traditional bouzouki player would probably be Eoin O'Neill. I'm very fond of his lightness and dynamics. On a contrary note, I love the chord progressions that Manus Lunny has produced over the years. There is a young player that hasn't yet been mentioned, however, and he lives close to Dublin - Ruairí McGorman. He's a great fiddle player also and from a well-known musical family. He's clearly a big Alec Finn fan as this clip demonstrates. As a side note, Aidan Connolly is top notch too.

Interesting that a new generation is picking up the trichordo now, first I saw was the bouzouki and banjo man in Mórga, Jonas Fromseier:
