Since the mid 1970s I've never had anything else than the old style tailpieces on 12 mandolins so far – never ever had any problem. Exception: I once had a Monteleone-style TP on a Kentucky Dawg model, which was okay, but changing strings was certainly not easier.

i always change the cast tp back to a cheapo stamped tp....felt and a piece of leather prevent any rattling...and a pair of pliers to adjust the cover seem to work well....its not rocket science

In terms of ergonomics, I find the stamped tailpieces preferable to many of the altrnatives.

I’d rather change strings on any of my three mandolins which have them than on those that don’t (........ except for the two which came with the James.)
