Thread: Tabs and music sheets?

    Post Tabs and music sheets?

    Hi all,

I seem to be learning the bouzouki by just running through tabs. So I was wondering if you much more knowledgeable people would post or send links to your resources for tabs or how you translate your tabs from other instruments.

    Many Thanks,
    Sir_Gen

I apologize for not noticing your request. Or for forgetting if I did (age does that to you).

I have four main sources for tunes that end up as tabs on my computer.
    1. Right here at mandolincafe.
    2. Mandozine.com
    3. Mandolessons.com
    4. thesession.org

My primary software is the full version of TablEdit. I am playing mandolin, but you can specify bouzouki tunings in TablEdit and it will translate. Thesession.org is a source for ABC files, but TablEdit does a good job of importing ABC's. Mandolessons.com can give you pdf's with tabs and 'dots' but they are for mandolin, so you would have to do some manual work to get them into bouzouki tabs.

    That's ok, great info too.

How would you go about converting a tune to a bouzouki tune in TablEdit. Really wana learn "Hurt" and a few other bits.

Others in this subforum should chime in here on best way of converting tabs to bouzouki since I don't play the bouzouki, but here is how I would approach it starting with a mandolin tablature file.
    1. load the tef file in TablEdit
    2. Click on the module name up there in the upper right corner. The name will probably be the name of the instrument the tablature is written for, but it doesn't have to be. So for one of mine it would be 'Mandolin'.
    3. A dialog box opens with 3 pages: Module, Tuning, and Clef. Click on Module and change the module name if desired, click on Apply.
    4. Go to the Tuning tab in the dialog, click on the dropdown list of preset tunings, then click on which ever preset you like. Maybe Bouzouki (GDAD). Make sure the radio button "Fingerings" is clicked. Click OK
    5. The tabs will now change to reflect the new tuning.
    6. This operation is slightly buggy in TablEdit. Sometimes the fingerings come out an octave high. This may be because you are coming from mandolin tabs (mandolin music notation is usually written an octave lower than the real tone). There is a check box in the above dialog marked "Octaver" that is supposed to adjust fingerings down an octave, but sometimes it doesn't. Whatever. If the resulting fingerings are off by an octave, undo the previous operation and try again after messing around with the Octaver check box.

One problem with TablEdit (other than the above) is that it is hard to find answers to questions on how to do this or that task. There is a manual that can be downloaded from the TablEdit site which can help but often doesn't. I have spent a lot of time with TablEdit just fooling around trying to learn its ins and outs and foibles. That is probably the most frequently used way to learn it. We don't have a subforum for TablEdit, but questions about how to work with it will almost always find answers when posed here or in the music theory subforum or even in the Newbies social group.

    Hello there!
It's an interesting question, actually, as most of the tabs I bumped into are single voice tunes without any backing in them. And I sometimes see guys on YouTube who play melodies with backing simultaneously, like what you do on your classic or fingerstyle guitar. Does anyone happen to have a source of such tabs or just a decent guide on how to play in such a manner?

I have found this site useful over the years:

    http://banwarth.free.fr/

He offers a chord dictionary, well as Tab to some really interesting tunes. Bear he mind he uses GDAE tuning.

Hi Sir Gen, not sure if the following is much help but theres a great site here in Ireland called Online Academy of Irish Music oaim.ie
Its a great resource for all instruments but I know that they have a bouzouki course on it which specialises in accompaniment in GDAD. Also very good resource for DAGDAD Guitar backing of tunes. Only proble is that you have to pay for it. works out at roughly €25 per month. could be worth tying if for a month and see how ya get on. You have full access to all classes including fiddle, banjo, concertina etc. They have a few sample classes on youtube so you'll get an idea of the quality of the course and if it suits your needs

Can anyone help me locate mandolin tabs for Poor Boys Delight in C ? I have been enjoying playing chords/lyrics, but having trouble playing the notes in the melody.
    Thanks, Tim
