... There's more of these things out there?
Yup, they made a few

Somewhere in my memory there's a lurking thought that Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown played one of these, tuned as a mandola. Anyone else remember that?

Well, Gatemouth does have an electric mandola credit on one of his records, Blackjack if I'm not mistaken. I have never been able to find a photo of him playing one, however.
I don't see the Kent 836 as often as some of the other Kent e-mandos, but they're out there.

Looks way cool, this model, but too much work for me.
Ended at $281 plus $19 shipping -- way more than I would have thought considering the condition and being made in Japan. Does have a coolness factor that most modern instruments lack. Another fella has one on eBay in nicer condition for $1000 or best offer. I'm not sure if that price is based in reality.
There are several Kent 744s, a somewhat more common model, being offered for $750 and up. I don't know what's up with that ... I have sold a handful of 744s but never for that much. The 836 is a lot uglier than the 744 if you ask me. I was bidding but I didn't go as high as $281.
