    Looking at a New york pro, 1973 Harmony, Magnum, Johnson MA100 and a Kentucky k140 as a first mandolin. Are they all comparable in sound and quality?...

    I think that many here might agree that the Kentucky would be the best choice from that list. A KM-140 or 150 can be a great place to start and can give satisfaction for many years, particularly if set up well by an experienced luthier or repair person, including filing and smoothing the ends of sharp frets.
