I played it in the late 80's and it's a goodun for sure!
My guess they still have it but may not be bringing it out on the road these days. After Oh Brother I doubt he would need to ever sell it.

[After Oh Brother I doubt he would need to ever sell it. ]

    Why?

I seriously doubt OB made any of the musicians on the tour or in the movie even a fraction of the paycheck that the main actors (such as George Cloony) recieved.

True but then again, they don't maintain the lifestyle that Clooney does, either.

At one time I heard they had split up, and Nancy got the Loar. #That must have been temporary
    The mandolin is:
73014 F5 Mandolin Apr 25, 1923 Shipped 4/11/23, serial number in ink, light tobacco finish, reversed labels. Nancy Blake

I recall it being a good average Loar

Here's a picture from the July 2002 Down from the Mountain concert in Atlanta.
Notice that she stills connects the strap at the peghead.

    Darryl:

How was it shipped two weeks before it was signed and dated? Did Mr. Loar post date his signature?

Not sure, but I think the last tune mentioned in the above set is called "Primrose Lass". I could be wrong, but I seem to remember it that way. Good set of tunes and really played well on the mandos.

The "Fiddler's Companion" could set me straight on the name, perhaps.

I guess it's great to see a Loar F5, but they all look the same to me. . . I really love seeing that 12 fret dreadnaught of Norman's. #What a superb guitar!

While I always dug Norman - it was really Nancy's playing on mando and cello that hooked me -
she has a very elegant style -
listen to "Belize" from Lighthouse on the Shore
or John Hartford's "Florida Rag" from her "Grand Junction" album ( I think that one made it onto one of the early Norman and Nancy CDs )
Loar - fancy - worn - whatever - the music those folks make on whatever they are playing transends any materialistic measurement.

man, that is one of the coolest phrases I have heard in a looong time- "the music those folks make on whatever they are playing transends any materialistic measurement." Thanks a lot.
A wrong note played timidly is a wrong note. A wrong note played with authority is an interpretation.

Norman's guitar is an 00-4x (x = I don't know). He is often pictured with his 00-45, but he also plays an 00-40, 00-41, and 00-42. He stopped playing the D-18 professionally for the most part after Hobo's Last Ride.

David, Thanks for replying. You are right about "Primrose Lass". I typed it like what was on the DVD box. Also, I believe "Within a Mile" is actually "Within a mile of Dublin".
