Hi Guys, here's a link to some of the tunes that the Frenchies over here are playing. Quite a selection of different keys, but for beginners some are fun and simple to play. Also, for the rythm be sure to check out the videos too Enjoy! http://tournealaube.free.fr/p-jc-tou...epertoire.html

Some very nice stuff there. Here is my quick run-through of the tune to the old Georges Brassens song "Ballade des dames du temps jadis". This is a mazurka written to accompany the famous poem of the same name by the 15th century poet Francois Villon -- famous for its recurring refrain "Ou sont les neiges d'antan?", translated by Rosetti as "Where are the snows of yesteryear?".

Played on bowlback mandolin with tenor guitar backing.

Good job with the tune, Martin, and thanks for tracing that quote.

I downloaded it and had it printed and spiral bound.

I picked up the printed book this morning. 177 pages of spiral bound bliss. I then put in on my music stand, with a pencil and some sticky flags. I up a pot of coffee and have been sight reading and marking favorites all day.

I've recorded another couple of tunes from this book now. The French waltz "La mal-aimable", played as a tenor guitar duet, is in the Tenor Guitar section of the Cafe here.

The other tune is a Flemish dance tune from the town of Mechelen, which was recorded by Jan Smed on his 1997 album "Airekes". It's in the book under its French translated title "Quadrille Malinois", but the correct title is of course in Flemish: "Mechelse quadrille".

My recording has the melody played on mandolin, doubled one octave down on tenor guitar, to a tenor guitar rhythm.

That is a very high power factor collection. What I mean is a high percentage of the tunes are really fun to play and sound great. Very few bore me or disappoint me as I sight read through it.

French fiddle tunes have not been easy to find until this collection. It is a kind of windfall for me.

Original site is down now, along with a lot of the personal millennial sites, here’s the original French tune book with TAB, followed by the same book I believe, but with an index at the end. Enjoy!

And here is the same (I think) book in abc format -this will print multiple tunes per page.

The link doesn't work for me. I get the 'error 404' message...

You’re welcome. I like that a lot of the tunes are referenced to other earlier sources. Many examples can be found using these keywords on YouTube.
And also some of the tunes are like fragments of the ones we play today, some are played all across Europe, and quite differently, some with words.
The rhythm can vary a lot too...
    Enjoy!

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but in this site there is quite a lot of Asturian, Galician music, etc.:
