I'm headed back for the second time. It was awesome last year and should be even more of a fun & learning experience this time since Alan has been very open to feedback from the inaugural class and as a group we've come up with some great ideas.

Plus the Bibey and Benson jams promise to be epic!

Yep, heading back. Fun time last year, hope to see old friends and make new ones. Alan sent a list of jamming tunes, split out by skill level, to consider. Everything from common fiddle tunes to Dawg numbers, mostly for the first night meet/greet session where the large group will hopefully break out into smaller groups. Smart move, as poor Old Joe Clark aged quite a bit, as it took literally 30 mins to get through

The 3 lists of tunes and jamming with like-skilled groups was a good idea. Ocean side venue with mandolins. That's

I'm going back for the second time as well!

Really relaxed environment but amazing pickers to learn from. Met some really awesome people down there last year and being a very short walk from the beach is awesome for the off time.

And Omega for breakfast.....my mouth is watering....

Drew, It will be good to see ya again man!! Are you going to Fiddlers Grove this Weekend?
I'm pumped about going to this camp with Alan. He's one of my favorite players and just a great guy to boot. I attended a little workshop down there with him years ago before it became an official camp... he's just a great dude. I think were going to have some pretty good pickers this year too...

You too Gabriel! Unfortunately I can't make it to Fiddlers Grove. Headed out to Raleigh to do some balloon flying all weekend.
    Have a good time man!

I think you're right, there are gonna be some awesome pickers there. I may have to bump myself down to intermediate

You know it, man! I was at a jam Monday night and a guy tapped me on the shoulder, asked if I was going....how he knew that is a mystery.

Alan has 35 attendees this year, double the 2016 number. And he's already planing 2018, with a surprise instructor or 2...

Hey, two of my housemates! See you in one week gents!

From the looks and comments the regular vacationers were giving us last year with the number of folks walking around with "tiny guitar cases", 35 pickers will be quite the spectacle.

Good thing we're not a banjo camp as that would likely cause a mass exodus from the coast.

    Hey guys,

Let me tell you what. The last 2 months have been stress packed, full of traveling, headaches at work and at home, etc.
I am READY to be at the beach and relaxing and learning with you guys.

I'm not as brushed up on the jam tunes as I'd hoped to be, but that's life. I'll get by and learn as we go! Came away with so many cool and inspiring ideas last year and I know this one will be even better.

What time is everyone rolling into town?

This is definitely the best part: Chill time!

As early as possible mid-afternoon, and hopefully the houses will be available before 4:00.

Well, the 2nd annual Alan Bibey Mandolin Camp is over and were all back home. Just wanted to say that this camp was a blast!! Very well put together and ran. The instructors were all great and the amenities were awesome! There was a lot of talent at this camp as well... some very good pickers. The jamming was awesome, the instructors were incredible! Alan really did a bang up job in my opinion. Alan, Wayne and Gary were all great instructors and each of them had a different approach and style witch was very nice. We had lots of class time but it never got boring i didn't think. The schedule and rotation of the instructors and mixing up of there styles was engaging. Thanks Alan, Wayne and Gary and thanks to all the new mando friends I made down there!! Can't wait until next year!

That sums it up pretty well! It was definitely a great time and my fingers are still sore (stupid guitar lol)!
On top of the great instruction and accommodations, it's the friendships that have been generated from the last 2 years that really make this camp a tremendous experience. I'm already looking forward to year #3 at Ocean Lakes!

I’ll add my two cents’ worth of feedback, also.

The 2nd Annual Alan Bibey Mandolin Camp was a huge success, with great improvements over the inaugural event. It attracted exactly double the number of pickers from 2016. The Wednesday Night Meet and Greet was awesome, with Alan welcoming all with information and a pizza party. We split out into separate jam sessions and picked tune after tune, until well into the evening. Got a chance to pick with Elijah, the Galax ribbon winner. Watch out for this young man!

The next days were chock full of classes, late night jams and fellowship. I hit the advanced classes and was treated to the personalized and comprehensive teaching styles of the 3 instructors – Alan, Wayne and Gary Brown. Alan’s advanced class featured the tune Flying High – talk about a cool number to tackle! A well-crafted book was provided to all campers, with tunes, exercises and general info. Thursday night featured a stage event (with sound system) for any campers who wanted to jam, with anyone – fellow campers, Alan, Wayne, etc. I got up there and picked Happy Birthday, Alan Bibey (Bill Monroe) – the Dawg tune -, as it was Alan’s birthday. Big fun. The 19th Annual Ocean Lakes Bluegrass Festival then kicked off with probably 8 well-known bands, running through Saturday night.

Saturday night featured Alan jamming at a lovely marsh-situated outdoor pub called Creek Ratz, with some local pickers/singers (his excellent bass player and a terrific flatpicker in the band). He called up a few of us to jam, which was a blast; Alan and I picked Janice (Grisman number). I hope I didn’t flub it too badly. It was a great way to end a great mandolin camp.

Then Sunday arrived, way too fast, and we all parted ways - All in all, a great, well-run event at a beautiful, clean resort, which will only get better. Next year, he’s looking to get Emory Lester – woot!

Alright, I simply can't refrain from joining my housemates and other co-conspirators in lauding the long-awaited return of the Alan Bibey Mandolin Camp. The pro-taught day sessions led by the three B's (Bibey, Benson, and Brown) were inspirational and loaded with useful information I'll be unpacking for months, while the nights were full of good picking and great friendships both old and new.

I do have to admit, it felt a bit strange using my two times onstage to play guitar but it was totally worth it as backup for such excellent pickers. I'll look to break out the mando next year, which can't come soon enough except I have a ton of practice to get in between now and then so will gladly accept the delay.
