    Default E. Barbella (c. 1760): Sonata a due mandolini e basso (Gimo 18)

Emmanuele Barbella (1718-1777): Sonata a due mandolini e basso

    I. Allegro - 0:00
    II. Largo - 3:10
    III. Allegro - 5:02

This is an 18th century original mandolin composition by Emmanuele Barbella (1718-1777) from the Gimo Manuscript at the University of Uppsala.

The Gimo music collection, named after the small city of Gimo in Uppland, Sweden, is a collection of music collected in Italy during the first half of 1762 by the young Swede Jean Lefebure. The Gimo Collection contains 359 works, of which 19 are written for chamber ensembles including the mandolin. These 19 pieces have all been transcribed in public domain PDFs by Eric Sandberg and are available for free download from Mutopia:

Scan of the manuscripts are at IMSLP.

This particular piece is a sonata for two mandolins and bass (Gimo 18). The instrumentation on my recording is:

Mandolin 1: 1890s Umberto Ceccherini mandolin
Mandolin 2: 1915 Luigi Embergher mandolin
    Bass: Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

I had previously recorded this sonata four years ago, but I decided to re-record: it is one of my favourite 18th century mandolin pieces and my old recording didn't reflect where I am now in my playing and recording technique. This new one has a bit more zest.

It's a fun piece and fairly straightforward to play. The first movement of this is also in August Watters' book "Exploring Classical Mandolin" (without the bass part).

    Nice job, Martin.
The mandocello line is especially pleasing.

VERY nice. +1 on the mandocello line.

We have recently restarted our weekly mandolin group gatherings, and one of the pieces we played this week was this Barbella sonata for two mandolins and basso, long a favourite from our repertoire folder. I decided to record an updated video. Unlike my 2017 take (which used a click track to align the three parts), this one was recorded on solo mandolin first (video and audio) and then overdubbing the mandocello and second mandolin to the video soundtrack. No repeats to keep it concise (and give myself a better chance of getting a reasonably mistake-free single video take for all three movements).

Emmanuele Barbella (1718-1777): Sonata a due mandolini e basso

    I. Allegro - 0:00
    II. Largo - 1:30
    III. Allegro - 2:29

    1898 Giuseppe Vinaccia mandolin (x2)
    Suzuki MC-815 mandocello
