Default More Guitar Pictures than Mandolins?

Many years ago, when I was hanging out on one of the guitar websites, there was a rule when posting about your guitar (especially a new purchase):

It was something along the lines of: 'If we don't see a picture, it doesn't exist'.

Consequently, the website was loaded with photos (and sometimes videos) of guitars; (some referred to it as 'Guitar Porn').

Having come from that background, I simply wondered why I don't see nearly as many mandolin pictures here at the Cafe - either in posts, or in albums in individual profiles? Do guitar players love to take pictures of their instruments more than mandolinists?

I do love mandolin pictures, to be sure! I agree that we should share. Some might hesitate because of security. I like to feature guitars as well as mandolins in photo albums in the mandolin cafe and guitar forums. Nothing prettier than a mandolin!

I've posted photos of my instruments when something warrants -- but so many times when I'm logged on, I'm not at home; when I am home, I seldom take pictures. When I take pictures, they aren't of my instruments. So there's that. There's also some dedicated strings just for posting photos of mandolins and I'll wander through those on occasion. Sufficient for my needs. I've had the same stable of instruments for, dunno, five years now. No reason to take pictures of instruments I've been playing (or ignoring) for five years!

Lots of us post photos when we acquire new or newly acquired instruments. Many of us often post photos from auction sites for mandolins under discussion. Scott and the gang have the Eye Candy pages and the Mandolin Archive. Enough pictures of mandolins for you?

I don't often take pictures of my instruments. Occasionally someone else does. When I take a picture of one, it's because I'm selling it. So I could post pictures of instruments I used to own. But how interesting is that?

So I don't think I've ever posted one just to post it. I'd have to get in the car to buy a roll of film and and get in the car again to pay for developing. Or talk someone with a cell phone into coming over and taking pictures.

Worth the work? Not to this boy! It's the sound I like to show off. So I created a website for that.

To answer the question more generally, you have to play the odds: There are more pictures of guitars in the world because there are more guitars in the world.

Why? Because guitar is a gateway instrument. It's the recreational marijuana of musical instruments.

For instance, in my house there are two mandos and eight guitars. And I suspect there are a few other Mandolin Cafe members with similar stats.

That's what a lot of folks in politics say. For instance, they say it when there's a big demonstration that the papers don't cover: "If there's no press, it didn't happen."

But it did happen. It really did. And my mandos exist. They really do.

I would have thought there was quite a lot of pictures of mandolins .....

If you want a bunch of them, work your way through some of this:
