    Default Braiding?

Could anyone explain how to braid so I could make my own strap?

If you can't find it on Youtube, it's not worth doing. Although I suppose you could ask a longhaired woman, as a last resort.

There are more complicated styles of braiding, like the never ending braid where there are no loose ends to tie or glue. Were I doing a strap I would do this style. While it is similar to a 3 strand braid it has a couple more moves, but is a much nicer and stronger finished product. There is also a woven braid that will make a strap wider and flatter and so more comfortable. Not really necessary for a mandolin that is light, but a guitar would benefit. Some use a round braid, and with soft leather that looks nice and can still be comfortable because of the softness of the leather.

This is the video I go back to whenever I can't remember what I learned from it before

Its lessons apply equally well to any material. Paracord or leather.

Well, asking a woman with long hair seems like good advice. But why don't you buy one from Lakota Leathers? I did and have a beautiful extremely soft and comfortable strap and it helps the makers, too!

I found a booklet at a crafts store that showed me how to make the braiding. It was fun making my own strap.

It's the fun of making it yourself, just like building your own mandolin.

We say plaited here sometimes, too, but I usually hear braided.

    Anyhow, make three strips, then:

    - Move the left to the middle.
    - Move the right to the middle.
    - Move the left to the middle.
    - Move the right to the middle.
    - Move the left to the middle.

Thanks but that is plain plaiting (Pronounced PLATTING in the UK).
I need the round braiding which the earlier video showed in great depth.

Here's a great site with various options: http://www.seekyee.com/Slings/howtos.htm

Here's what I used for my strap, but I prefer the flat style to the rounded style:
