Renting a place in Black Mountain NC last week of October. Looking for jams, acoustic instrument shops, and places where good live music is played. Doesn't have to be live Bluegrass music necessarily. Like a good live Blues band now and then.

ISIS Music Hall in W A'ville has a bluegrass jam every Tue. night. Jack of the Wood downtown A'ville has a bg and old time jam every week. Pisgah Brewing in Black Mtn. has live music almost every night. Grab a Mountain Express when you get here, all local music will be listed in there. Have fun!
In Boone, this store is a good one; terrific historical photos along the walls

and be sure to go sit with Doc downtown and pick a lick or 3

The last time I was in Black Mountain I couldn't find a jam so I just sat down at the train station and played.

I can second Acoustic Corner is great. Really nice guys there. Black Mountain is a fantastic little town. Grab something to eat at Louise's while you're there! Not jam related, but Pisgah Brewery always has some fairly decent music going on when the weekends hit. Not sure if they'll have a big band there when you are in town, but I have seen Punch Brothers there twice, so they do get really quality bands. Hope this helps!
Very fun town! Acoustic Corner is sort of small, but it's a nice store. I was there last Saturday, and they had a nice used Mendel OM that was fun to play. A block away, Dripolator Coffee is outstanding! There also is another music store nearby called Song of the Wood, which specializes in mountain and hammered dulcimers.
still trying to turn dreams into memories
It took me posting in another thread to remember but Bailey Acoustic Shop in downtown Black Mountain has some very nice and popular mandos, including a Weber Gallatin OM, alongside their own custom guitars. It's a small storefront tucked among others so is easy to miss but well worth the visit.

Thanks guys! Just checked out Bailey's. Nice website. Acoustic corner looked like they carried Eastman's.

Well. We never got to Black Mountain last October. I had a major surgery that month. However we finally did get there this week and we still are here. I did get to Acoustic Corner. Nice store. He had some Eastman's plus a Gibson A-1. IIRC it was from the mid 1930's. All original and in nice shape. Also had a Czech made OM. Can't recall the builder. I stopped by Bailey's. No one was in and the tenant downstairs told me he was only doing custom guitar builds now. I did get to set in on a couple songs with a group that played over at a bar on Cherry Street Wednesday Night. Just thought I'd revive this old thread and thank everyone that posted. Oh yeah. Saw the train station. Looks like there's a bunch of shops in it now.

I jammed at the Black Mountain Ale House on Cherry Street. They had a band hosting the jam and everything had to be in the key of G but they were very friendly folks and it was fun. The hamburgers were great there too and nice cold beer!
You know, I believe that was likely the place we went to. I know we entered around back, (We like sneaking in) and there was a big flight of stairs around front. I had the wings (rubbed). Band let a couple of us set in at one time or another. They were playing for tips, it appeared. Had a great time. We are going to another place tonight on Montreat Road. We're seeing "Mean Mary and the Contraries". He name is Mary James. Looks to be very talented. Saw her stuff on You Tube. Great voice, nice repertoire, plays fiddle, banjo and guitar. Small cover charge but I think it's going to be well worth it.

We stopped in Statesville NC on the way here and I regret I didn't stop at Harry and Jeannie West's Fine Musical Instruments. We were tired and we wanted to get to the place we were renting. We're going back thru on Sunday and they will be closed unfortunately. Had I realized that I might have taken the time.

For future reference since I've been there in the last year or so, West's is now being run by Harry and Jeannie's son Scott. Nice guy. Decent selection of Eastmans, The Loars, and such but there are likely a couple of interesting others. If you strike up a conversation, he may even break out a hidden gem that's not for sale. I got to play a sweet Pricetone that was better than anything hanging on the walls, especially for those of you who prefer a flat fretboard.

Bailey also has a Shop where he repairs, builds and teaches Luthier courses etc.... at his house in an adjacent barn /workshop; great Guy, Rowan plays one of his Guitars as does my Son...………… reach out to him at his shop or store...………. he's got his finger on the pulse of the area better than most. He is also kind of a Zen Master...…. multi instrumentalist but prefers to play banjo if he has a choice, and can drink a lot of beer.
While in Black Mountain, NC I purchased a really nice book called "Wayfaring Strangers." Written by Doug Orr and Fiona Ritchie, it recounts the development of Scots/Irish music and it's influence on the music of Appalachia. Great reading.
