Nice post, Dawg. I wouldn't have discovered mandolin if it weren't for what you and Jerry did on Ripple. Such a gift. Miss him so much.

Happy belated birthday to Jerry Garcia, a musical force who inspired me and many others to pick up an instrument.
Garcia's impact is immeasurable.
Thank you for posting here, Dawg!
Thanks, man. And here's some ephemera, like a species of cock(roach) named after him...

He is well missed. My first Dead show was in '79. I've only attended 2 post shows, early, when they played as "The Dead" and "Phil and Friends". Without Jerry, it was not satisfying and that led me to bluegrass festivals, picking up the mandolin, and never looking back. Well, once in a while There are so many dead bands where I live it's crazy and the music is timeless.
When Looking for my first Grateful Dead LP to buy, I ended up with Old & In The Way.
That lead me to Griman's famous Great American Music Hall recording with John Carlini I think from '78?? That started my mando fondness. It took me so long to actually pick one up and learn to play.
Indeed, I'd be a poorer man if I never heard the Pizza Tapes or Grateful Dawg.
Yep Jerry was a great musician with demons like most of us have, he left us too early for sure,I seen the Dead a handful of times and the Jerry Garcia Band a few times, all worth it, great shows! He will always be missed!
I got to go to the Dead and company Chicago shows this year, never saw Jerry live but I sure miss his music, and appreciate his legacy!
With my bday August 2nd, I have always had a fondness for celebrating Jerry's bday
I should be pickin' rather than postin'
Thanks, Dawg. The Pizza Tapes recording of Jerry singing Long Black Veil is a treasure that encapsulates so much of what I love about Jerry as a musician. The vocals are so tender and fragile, and Jerry's break is just as expressive: from achingly sad on the first pass--how he releases the bends into the descending lines!--to almost triumphantly joyful on the second. Just brilliant, and it almost brings me to tears every time.
Not being a 60s rocker or GD fan, I only got into Jerry Garcia through the New Riders, Pizza tapes, and the 5 or 6 very fine Garcia-Grisman albums.
Those albums are some of my favorite acoustic music records ever.
Happy birthday Jerry.

Jerry Garcia is actually the origin or my mandolin obsession.
The lineage transcribes as:
Grateful Dead>Jerry Garcia>Garcia/Grisman>Dawg
So Mr. Grisman,
You and Jerry share co-responsibility for all the Calton cases my wife keeps tripping over.
Thanks to both of you for that.
Barry
His influence is great. His legacy will be long.

Saw one Dead show in 1973. They were at their best. Got up at 6AM to stand in line to buy a few tickets that came up for sale after a prior announcement the venue was sold out. They put 17000 people in a venue rated at 14000 yet it went off without a single bad incident. They played for three and a half hours straight with Phil and Jerry on fire, one of Phil's best nights ever.Wall of sound and minmal light show at a time when the lights were a big deal. I can still hear and picture Here Comes Sunshine as Donna joined in on harmony and lights came up 40 plus years later.
He left way too early.
I wasn't introduced to the Dead until I moved to North America as an adult. My wife's best friends are all Deadheads and got me into their music. Sadly I never got to see Jerry play, but he still became a big influence in my musical life. Through the Dead I found Old & In The Way who helped launch my now mandolin obsession.
Thankful to both Jerry and Dawg for my (not so very) long and strange trip so far.
I got turned on to GD with Wake Of The Flood when a friend played it for me in '75, first show W&M Hall '76, last one Hampton '95 (Dark Star!), and when I saw Tiny on PBS in '84 I immediately heard the parallel to Jer. Went out and bought me a KM-100, and the race was on. I'd been playing guitar since '71. So, Jerry is my inspiration on both instruments! Thank you, Jerry! Thank you, Dawg! (And thanks for giving Mike Marshall the job all those years ago - love me some Mike!)
