I believe the one pictured on the left is now discontinued, but some places still have some left in stock.
Don't know if any upgrade to the strings happened other than the package design, though.

Current Cafe blog post on the subject. This discusses the well-known J-74 mandolin strings, now EJ-74 but apparently no changes other than the label. Looking at D'Addario's on-line info I see the "E" prefix added to most of their strings...

I thought it was down to the "E"co friendly packaging; being a sceptic, a sealed plastic bag is cheaper than 4 paper packets!
