    Default Ashokan Farewell

My mandolin and guitar arrangement of Jay Ungar's 1983 classic "Ashokan Farewell," best known as the music of Ken Burns' "Civil War".

Thanks you and nice playing Alfonso! I recently learned the tune after hearing it on the Mandolin Extravaganza CD and recognizing it from the PBS mini series.

BTW - I am really looking forward to the Ken Burns series on the Vietnam War. I am sure the sound track will be awesome, but without much mandolin.

When I played fiddle (several years ago, I got so I could not tune the pegs or tighten bow due to neuropathy) so I donated it to a good cause. BUT turned to the mandolin & that was on fiddle & now on mandolin, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG!

Jay Ungar says he was standing at Ashokan at the end of one of his fiddle camps, and sorta improvised the tune -- mid 1970's, I think. Burns's Civil War PBS series made it well-known. I do programs of Civil War music but wouldn't include it, any more than I'd include some of the recently-written songs about the war.

    Beautiful melody, though.

Indeed, wonderful tune whether it's 50 or 150 years old.
