Thanks you and nice playing Alfonso! I recently learned the tune after hearing it on the Mandolin Extravaganza CD and recognizing it from the PBS mini series.
BTW - I am really looking forward to the Ken Burns series on the Vietnam War. I am sure the sound track will be awesome, but without much mandolin.
A good end of summer tune! I did this almost exactly one year ago.

When I played fiddle (several years ago, I got so I could not tune the pegs or tighten bow due to neuropathy) so I donated it to a good cause. BUT turned to the mandolin & that was on fiddle & now on mandolin, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG!
Thank you for the video, it was such a peaceful setting you put into it. Lovely!
Jay Ungar says he was standing at Ashokan at the end of one of his fiddle camps, and sorta improvised the tune -- mid 1970's, I think. Burns's Civil War PBS series made it well-known. I do programs of Civil War music but wouldn't include it, any more than I'd include some of the recently-written songs about the war.
Beautiful melody, though.

Indeed, wonderful tune whether it's 50 or 150 years old.
A great story Peter, thank you. John
Yep, thanks for sharing that updated Ashokan history, Peter.
