Thread: Art Noveau banjolin. Very cool!

Smile Art Noveau banjolin. Very cool!

I bought my self a banjolin from Germany. I'm not sure it's German made but it probably is. It's probably from around 1900 and in very good shape for it's age. There's no cracks and the neck is straight and the frets are fine. Sounds like a banjo

The rim or body on it has become a bit oval with time and I have to fix it because it causes the neck to tilt forward, making the string height too high.

Cool. I am no authority but my understanding is the slotted headstock is typical of German mandolins.

    I'll bet it does.

Could also be French manufacture, even Italian; the slotted, scroll headstock and elaborately sculpted resonator flange give that impression. And no tailpiece? That in itself is quite unusual.

Dude, the lion flange looks awesome!
Check out The Past and The Curious, a fun podcast for families, kids and adults who enjoy exploring the past. In addition to tales from the past, there's always an original musical performance. I play mando, guitar, and banjo and am occasionally joined by some great musicians. It's pretty good.

I'm thinking of talking to a mandolin/banjo builder and see if I should make a mold of the flange...
