Thread: 1913 Gibson K-2 mandocello

    Default 1913 Gibson K-2 mandocello

Here's a pic of me and my 1913 (ser. no. 15250, if I'm reading faint pencil marks correctly) Gibson K-2 mandocello. It had to be refinished, since when it came to me, it had a heavy black lacquer on it covering up a multitude of lutherie sins. I let a local furniture refinisher work on it, and he chose to let wood grain shine through. It also has new hardware. It plays very nicely! Will try to get a sound file posted soon!

Lots of K-2's had black finishes, originally. Was that the case with yours, or had it been refinished in black to cover up sketchy repairs?

The guy who refinished mine found two layers before getting to the original finish, which he said had been black. I thought about getting something closer to a restoration than a refinishing, but its binding had also been replaced in lots of places (and some pretty unsightly repair seams on the bottom, which luckily this pic doesn't display), so I just told him to make it look like what he thought would look best.

No, I'm trying to play the Allemande from Cello Suite no. 3 in that pic. That wasn't the first (or last) grimace!
