    Default Asturian, Gallician ABC site/collection?

Many years ago, I know that I came across an ABC collection of tunes from Asturias, Gallicia , Basque region and other Northern Spanish autonomies. I've searched in the past few months and can't find anything but haven't found much. The Asturian tunes are great, and they seem to have also filtered into the repertoire of UK/Eire folks like Nuala Kennedy and Flook.

Any links I should check out? I know there are few folks from Spain on the cafe.

The Asturians seem to tune their flutes and pipes to Eb, which makes it a bit more trouble for me to transcribe the tunes straight off the CD on flute. I'll learn to play them in Eb, but my facility in that key isn't up to full speed transcription. (On mando, I can just tune up a half step, or capo, and play it in 'good old D! )

    Hi Mandocrucian,

A lot of the Asturian stuff is passed from one musician to another by ear. I too love their music and have found it difficult to access their vast library of tunes and songs.

Llan de Cubel are one of my favourite bands although they are not playing any more. Felpeyu is also another favourite. They have put out some nice CDS although the lead singers are not as strong as they could be (my wide who is a world music singer said that and knows them personally).

The town of Cichon is where all the music action is. It is worthing paying a visit to catch up with members of Felpeyu for instance.

I will see what other resources I can dig up.

It's almost like the Celtic musicians are trying to reclaim Galicia and it's Celtic roots. Alasdair Fraser and natalie Haas also do a bit of Galician stuff. There's quite a scene in Barcelona now, especially with the music schools and the once-a-year Barcelona Fiddle Congress. Our current favorite is not a mandolin player herself, but her band is quite traditional, Begoņa Riobo fiddle) and her band, Riobo.

This is all so cool. Yet another style of music to explore! Thanks, Niles for instigating this thread and everyone else for the links. Keep them coming.

I downloaded some basque music from Kepa Junkera some time ago. I have to dig those up.

It is nice to be introduced to the interpreters but I also like to hear the original sources of this music. It seems from a rudimentary scan of videos that the Asturian music is bagpipe-based. Is that so?

I used to share a flat with a geologist from Oviedo when living in Bilbao, he played bagpipes when back home, but also had a kind of oboe with a wide bell in pale wood which he used. It was loud & he wasn’t able to use it in the flat, so would drive up to the park to play. I’m not sure if that was anything Asturian or just a surrogate for the pipes when travelling. I had a browse just now and couldn’t find anything like it associated with Asturias.

Beanzy, your roommate's oboe sounds like a shawm from a cobla band, but those are from Catalonia. I don't know enough about Spanish music to know if Asturias has similar bands. All I know is that I loved listening to records of Sardanas played by cobla bands my Dad bought when in Spain on vacation in the 50's or 60's. The reedy shawms with brass instrumens and whistle-like tabors just sounded so neat all together.

Oh my goodness, is five years the standard expiration date for links posted on the internet now?
I did find one link to a Spanish site that posted .abc but that seems to have evaporated too…

The videos still work. I found some newer ones of Begoņa Riobó playing with this hurdy-gurdy player, Anxo Pintos:

I probably downloaded a bunch of the abcs from the defunct sites but will check later to see what I have on my computer.

My friend in the UK who plays and dances for all these kind of world music linked me to this jota. I love the crazy hyper beat and dancing. I want one of those hats the guys wear. I wonder how this tune sounds on mandolin.

There is an option for viewing the tunes as "round notation (non-mensural)" from the pull down menu.

Speaking for myself, yes, I can read the square note notation, it's much like chant, and I already am a musician at a Catholic church.

This is even more like modern notation as it has a five line staff.

Great stuff. Footwork is right with the beat, though. Looks like it would be fun to get in on.

Lovely tunes and dances, though it’s not really open. I wonder what would happen to you if you ever played a flattened sixth!
