    Default My new Beavertail pancake

I managed to get to play my brand new Sawchyn Beavertail mandolin for about an hour today. I like everything about it. It has a sweet and fairly powerful tone. Like so many people have already said, they are fun little mandolins, and a lot of instrument for the price. I bought mine at Folkways Music. I assume it takes light strings?

I’m struggling quite a bit with my pick hand at the moment. The switch from my tenor guitar to this is harder than I thought it would be. I haven’t played mandolin in quite a while, and tenor guitar is going to continue to be my main instrument, so it might take several weeks to get back up to speed. The transition for my left hand is easier. I have no problems playing tunes with that hand, but chop chords are a little rough since I don’t do those chords on tenor guitar.

I don’t know why the front shots are so blurry. Maybe some lint caught in my IPad’s lens?

I have been harboring a secret desire to own an octave. This builder might be an interesting option. That's a beautiful instrument and as an expat Oregonian I'm liking the label.

I had a Beavertail octave mandolin for awhile with similar woods -- very well made and great sound. I don't have it anymore but still have a couple of other Peter Sawchyn instruments -- a carved OM and an carved A-oval-hole mandolin. Since the Canadian dollar is still relatively low right now (about 0.80 US), it could be attractive.

Regarding the OP's question about using light strings: why not ask the builder? Peter Sawchyn is listed in the MandolinCafe database. I bought a mandocello from him a few years ago, and found him to be an excellent communicator. (I'll plug his building skills, too, while I'm at it: the 'cello is a glorious instrument.)
