That's stunning.

Put me down as big fan of two-point mandolins . . .
I viewed in person it when I visited TME today. Light as expected, balanced beyond what should be possible. The asymmetrical design is completely understated, not the first thing you'd notice. As stunning as the pictures are, words escape me to describe how beautiful this looks. Even the custom fitted Calton Case seems extra awesome, not sure why though LOL. The person who ends up with this one is getting something VERY special for certain.

Oh and as far as tone goes...I didn't play it. Hard to resist and the offer was there but didn't feel right (it was soooo new and I had no intention at all to take it home). Didn't feel right to put my paw prints all over it. I did leave with a spectacular sounding Collings Mandola GT. Awesome focused projection and resonance... it feels so good against my chest

Yeah, I don't know whether to run toward it, or away from it. Glad I'm pretty satisfied with what I have, but that mandolin is of a different place.
Ellis makes some beautiful looking mandolins, but I haven't found one I could bond with.
I wonder how long this one will last at TME ...
... not all those who wander are lost ...
It's listed in the classifieds—"only" $9500.
Now, see, I would have drooled all over it and damaged the finish, then I would be on the hook for all that money, so it's just as well I can't try it out.

"only" $9500 . . . send me TWO!
Yeah, right . . . .
(sigh)
However, I do agree with MissingString - if I had no intention of buying such a beautiful and pricey instrument, I probably wouldn't have touched it either . . . not like some some 16-year old dopes you see at Guitar Center who take $3,000 Les Paul's off the wall, beat on them for 20 minutes and then end up trying to haggle a lower price for some $159 knock-off.
I don't mean for this inquiry to be controversial at all, but I'm just curious. What makes this $4,000.00 more than his A Special models? I see a couple points put on the body which would require a different mold I guess, but almost the same headstock. I can understand all the extra work on an F style, but maybe he's doing something special on the voicing or using a much better grade of wood?

What is TME?
Bought a two point Ellis at Carter Vintage Monday.
Took two flights to get it back to Colorado.
Was sweating getting in on board as a carry on.
It was not a problem with Southwest.
Never mind. TME must be The Music Emporium

$4k buys you the ownership of something unique and special. The very best wood a builder has is used along with the finest inlay money can buy.
A nice Winchester over/under 12 gauge is a fine shotgun, a presentation grade is a whole new ballgame that superceeds function. Extreme pride of ownership. And a whole lot of I've got one, you don't.

That is plain & simple mando porn.

Despite the high cost of living, it still remains popular...
That is the first mandolin I have ever thought I'd pay $9,000 for !! Why do some lucky people pay that much? Because they can, I guess. I'd like a Porsche someday too.
To a buyer who can spare the funds this may be an investment that will appreciate in value over the years if well cared for. As a general rule buying instruments as investments does not yield a net positive result but something like this Ellis may be an exception. Like owning a beautiful work of art you don't need to be a mandolin player to enjoy its beauty. Wish I had one and I shall ask for permission from my accountant and wife. She says certainly....not.
Easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
But the point of not playing that which you would never consider buying is one of my personal rules. I will try something beyond what my budget is, but not outrageously so. I'll play that Northfield Big Mon if I'm really trying the F5S. That's about it. 50% is really pushing things.
Had many chances to try pre war Martins. Passed every time. I've regretted picking up what I thought was just another old J 45 and regretted it ever sense. Turned out to be a 1939 J 35. Been haunted by the sound of that guitar.

since this has popped back up, I can answer some questions. Roughly, this is $4000 more than my Deluxe A, but its a special, not a deluxe (triple bound everywhere mitered points, etc.). This particular mandolin has the prettiest piece of old growth sugar maple for the back and sides and neck of any mandolin that has ever been, or ever will be built by anyone, anywhere. There is a bit of a premium on the selling price because of that. A twin point deluxe with a nice 2 piece back would be priced about $7500
Tom I hope someday you gain some confidence in your taste and abilities.
Stunning instrument, no doubt she sounds as good as she looks!
Edit to add: Upon reflection I suppose my above comment could be taken as snarky or disrespectful - not my intention at all! I have immense admiration for your artistry, and I appreciate when someone shows deserved pride in their work.
