Happy, happy birthday to one really fine musician and one of my earliest mandolin heroes that is an extremely nice down to earth individual that helped me out with my mandolin obsession.

Your version of 'Nine Pound Hammer', with Doc Watson, has been a constant inspiration for me, for nearly 20 years.

Thank you, and 'Sto Lat' - may you live 100 years.

Happy birthday to the man who created the music that showed me a new world, and inspired me to pick up the instrument way back in 1978.

Despite everything about the man's music/playing, I respect the fire out of the Dawg because he's a kindred spirit when it comes to the mandolin and music.

This post from another thread says it all for me....Happy BDay Bro!

The mandolin was in perfect, near mint condition and sounded just as incredible as it does today, right from the first time I hit the open G string. Playing that instrument the next day in Carnegie Hall at the back of the stage without any mic was a religious experience. By the following weekend I couldn’t bring myself to take it with me to the next gig, fearful of disturbing its brand-spankin’ new condition. By the following gig after that I had re-thought the situation, having asked myself, “What’s it all about anyway?” Now, 27 years later, I have no hesitation in taking "Crusher" anywhere and, though well worn and no longer close to mint, it has withstood the tests of time splendidly. So to all you mandolin players I say, “Play that mandolin!” — regardless of its pedigree.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Grisman! Much respect for all the fine music you're brought into the world and all the progress you've made enlightening the general public and devoted players about the wonders of our beloved instrument. You've inspired so many.

I'll never forget the first time I heard the first Grisman album. I was living partly in Berkeley at the time, and went to see the Jerry Garcia Band (only time I did) at a fairly small club. The sound guy was playing music over the PA before the show, which was quite new to me and took some time to figure out, though I recognized the sound of a mandolin. I finally realized it was that first album, which I'd read about somewhere, and it just had to be that - couldn't be anything else. I heard it two times through entirely during the course of the night - before the show and between sets. I remember some of the show, but that album made a bigger impression on me. It was soo innovative, imaginative, and just brilliant. It's one of the albums that truly changed my life. Not that I've ever tried too hard to play like that - not up to speed on those chops - but it opened my mind to possibilities of the mandolin heretofore unimagined and thereafter imagined and inspired.

One other thing - I joke about how mandolinists of a certain age, when they bought a mandolin in the 1970s, the paperwork it came with included in the fine print a proviso stating the new owner had to learn "Friend Of The Devil" and "Maggie May."
